first, I assume the child is under the age of 17 and is a US citizen (or resident alien) with a social security number.

and I assume you filed your tax return in 2019.

if so, then it is best to amend that return, because you could be eligible for additional tax credits beyond the stimulus.

there is no guidance from the IRS at this point how to adjust the stimulus payment if you believe there has been an error.

However,  it would be possible on next year's tax return to obtain the $500 as a 'worst case scenario'.  here is why:

  • The stimulus payments are really based on your 2020 tax return (income, dependents, etc).
  • The IRS is using either 2018 or 2019 – whatever is available  - to ESTIMATE that payment
  • When you file next year there will be a “settle up” section on the tax return.
  • If you are due more stimulus (and this would include where you simply weren't provided $500 for a child that would qualify), you will receive it through the 2020 tax filing.
  • If you received too much stimulus (not the issue here), by law , you are not required to return it

Look at your federal tax return, Form 1040, on the first page where Dependents would be entered.

To access your current or prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and on the section Your tax returns & documents click on Show.  Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)

Or -

When you sign onto your online account and land on the Tax Home web page, scroll down and click on Add a state.

This will take you back to the 2019 online tax return.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen.  Then click on Print Center.  Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return.  Choose the option Include government and TurboTax worksheets

My daughter was claimed for the first 2 stimulus payments by her foster parents but I now have full custody of her. I do not make enough to file taxes so for this third stimulus payment I did not receive a payment for her and neither did her foster parents because they did not claim her on their taxes for this year. How can I add her as a dependent so that I can receive the stimulus payment for her.

File a tax return with the new Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet. This will allow you to reconcile your stimulus payments and receive any additional payment (refund).IRS Recovery Rebate Credit

  • In TurboTax Online once your return is open, select Wages & Income (to enter the tax return).

  • Select Federal Review at the top of the page > Continue to answer the questions for Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount

  • TurboTax will then include any stimulus amount due on your 1040 form.

There is nothing else to put on your return except your personal information if you have no income and no one else is listing you as a dependent on another return.  Be sure to have a bank card for deposit or a good address for you to receive a check before filing your tax return.

@jalessa2388 - suggest using one of the free sites - no need to pay to submit a tax return.

@Redfood9 There is no 4th stimulus check.   There have been three stimulus checks.  The first ones were in 2020---for $1200 for adults and spouses, $500 for dependent children under the age of 17; the second ones went out in late 2020 or early 2021 for $600 for adults, spouses and dependent children under the age of 17' the 3rd ones began in 2021 for adults, spouses and dependents for $1400 each.  The 3rd stimulus checks are still being issued in batches by the IRS.

@Earline1970 If your grandchildren live with you for 2021 then you will be able to claim them

next year

when you file your 2021 tax return ---- in 2022.

If you are asking about the new child tax credit, that begins later --- in July 2021---and details are not all known yet on how it will work, especially if you recently gained custody of the children.  Wait for further information from the IRS about that.

That CTC increase is not for 2020;  it is for 2021.   Your 2020 return does not have to be amended for it.  More information will be available soon; the details of how it will be implemented have not yet been clarified fully.  There may be monthly payments going out beginning in July 2021, with some of the CTC still left as a refundable credit on your 2021 tax return next year.

You file your return right and claim her if you are qualified to claim her.  If your return rejects because he already claimed her then you will have to print and mail your return.  The IRS will investigate to determine who is able to claim her.

Was she born in 2020?  A child born (even on Dec 31) is considered to live with you the whole year.  So pick the Whole Year at the top of the drop down box.

Be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them.  You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places.  Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.

I need to add my children to the non filers stimulus

Level 15
Jun 16, 2021 7:21:05 AM

@princesspee2369-_ Not quite sure what you mean by adding to a non-filer stimulus.   There is not an IRS portal at this time for "non-filers" to get stimulus checks.   But you can file a 2020 tax return to get the first and/or second EIP payment as a recovery rebate credit if you did not receive it yet.

The stimulus check is an advance on a credit you can receive on your 2020 tax return.  If something went wrong or you did not get the stimulus check in 2020, you can get it when you file your 2020 return in early 2021

The Recovery Rebate Credit will be found in the FEDERAL REVIEW section. ( you should see "Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount”)  If you are eligible it will end up on line 30 of your 2020 Form 1040.

Make sure that you enter ALL of the stimulus money received for the 1st and 2nd stimulus for yourself, your spouse and your children.

Or----are you confused and are you really asking about the advance child tax credit payments that begin in July?   There will be a portal for non-filers---but it is not ready just yet.

There will be monthly payments going out beginning in July 2021, with some of the CTC still left as a refundable credit on your 2021 tax return next year.

If you don't get the 3rd 1,400 for her it will be reconciled and included on your 2021 return next year.
