An independent contractor normally receives a 1099-MISC with an amount in box 7 for "non-employee compensation").

In the eyes of the IRS, you are a "business" whose produce or service is the work that you do for your customer.

In TurboTax Self-Employment (used to be "Home & Biz"), you go to the Business tab, click on Business Income and Expenses, then click on  Add Another Business.

Go through the Business Profile, to describe your business, and then do the income, expense, and other categories that apply to you.

As a sole proprietor of a "business", you actually have a number of expenses open to you that employees may not have.
