Question

Is it possible our Letter 6475 has an error?

We are filing married filing jointly for the first time this year and we received two separate letter 6475. Mine stated that I received $2800 on the third stimulus (which is correct) and his  stated that he also received $2800. However, his deposit was only for $1400. Now, I did have a second child who is now claimed as the second dependent on our 2021 tax return but I was still pregnant with him when we received our third stimulus so obviously he was not on our 2020 tax return as a dependent. Our 2021 tax return is now delayed but I can’t figure out if this is our fault or if the IRS made an error?

It is possible that Letter 6475 doesn’t match your records, or what you actually received.

You should check your account online with the IRS’ Your Online Account portal.  This will have your relevant stimulus payment information.

Letter 6475, Your Third Economic Impact Payment, was sent to EIP recipients in late January of this year.  This letter also applies only to the third round of Economic Impact Payments, but would also include “plus-up” payments.  According to the IRS’ IRS sending information letters to recipients of advance child tax credit payments and third Economic Impact Payments page,

The third round of Economic Impact Payments, including "plus-up" payments, were advance payments of the 2021 recovery rebate credit that would be claimed on a 2021 tax return. Plus-up payments were additional payments the IRS sent to people who received a third Economic Impact Payment based on a 2019 tax return or information received from the Social Security Administration, Railroad Retirement Board or Veterans Affairs. Plus-up payments were also sent to people who were eligible for a larger amount based on their 2020 tax return.

We are familiar with the online IRS portal. We had some issues with verification so we’ve never been able to actually get in because there were 2hr hold times for a representative for Assistance. We will try again later today, as it looks like the process has been streamlined a little better now. Thanks for the info, I’ll do a little bit more digging on the “plus up” payment as well.

We each got a Letter 6475 stating we were paid $1400 each, but the money was never deposited in our account. The online IRS system says the amount was $1400.
