I'm having aproblem with how TT2019H&B is treating (or failing to treat) my senior college student's final 1098T.

My son is a senior. Will graduate university for BA degree in ASU.  His 1098T box data should be enter-able in Step-By-Step manner, but this fully-updated version of TT2019 H&B may be glitching, as it is not allowing for it . His Box 1 amount (Payments received...) in 1098T is much larger  than his Box 5 scholarships and grants. His scholarships and grants DO NOT EXCEED his tuition and fee expenses.  In fact, my outlay for these costs was a few thousand greater than noted by ASU in box 1.  I had to revert to "Forms view" and forcibly enter the 2019 1098T data.  Now, TT is telling me that "It Turns Out (your son's) Educational Assistance Counts as Income."   My son is fully dependent upon me and has been for all 4 years of college.  The school's scholarship/grant money was meager at best...and now, in his final year, it must be counted as INCOME?  Something is not right here.  Are you guys having issues with the software?

O/S = Windows 10 pro...fully updated. 2019TTH&B on same machine as prior year 2018TTH&B w/successfully transferred data.

Sound like there may be an incorrect entry somewhere; you should be able to enter your son's 1098-T and receive an Education Credit.  Or, as you mentioned, something is wrong with your installed program.

You could uninstall, reinstall and update, then open your tax file to see if if makes a difference.

  • Make sure he is entered correctly as your Dependent.  Is her over 24?
  • In the Education section, make sure you didn't indicate that he has 'claimed the AOC four years' and he is 'at least half-time'.
  • Make sure you entered your additional expenses that are not included in the Box 1 Tuition amount (although from what you said, with Box 1 larger than Box 5, he should qualify anyway).
  • Is your income over the limit for the AOC?

At the Education Expenses Summary screen, try Editing your Student and Editing your School to be sure you indicated that he did receive a 1098-T.  You should have been able to enter it in step-by-step.

You could Delete the Education entries and try re-entering them.

The software uninstalled partially, leaving a few registry entries...a problem. I had to use a registry cleaner (JV2016Powerools) to remove all entries, and then had to delete the residual empty directories under Program Files (x86).  However, the coders for this 2019 H&B made getting access to the 1098T VERY DIFFICULT.  I had to go through hoops to get the program to give me that page so I could enter the scholarship/tuition entries.   Now I'm having issues trying to get my one free state to populate pages to do that return.  I never file electronically and that is not the issue.  The issue is that TurboTax keeps trying to extort $44 bucks for my one free state (AZ) and I am not paying it.  If the one free state is no longer free, I may look for another alternative next year.  I realize that electronic filing of the one free state is not free, but the forms and printouts for snail mail filing should be free .....or.... after all these years , I'm gone.
