If I am being told to check this entry and it says State Tax Refund Worksheet Item Q Line 1 what do I put in there?

Item Q, line 1 is the amount on line 5b of your 2018 Schedule A. It is the amount of state and local real estate taxes that you deducted in 2018.

I had the same question, thank you. Curious though: why on earth does Turbo Tax say to enter Item Q line 2, when it actually should be Item 5b ???

I have learned the programmers do what seems to be "odd things" for a reason.

I'm receiving 4 different errors related to State Tax Refund Worksheet, what's the correct items to enter for:

1. Item Q

2. Item Q line 3

3. Item Q line 1 (This seems to be line 5b of 2018 Schedule A based on this thread)

4. Item Q line 2

Actually, found the answer to my own questions thanks to the 3rd reply in this thread: https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/state-taxes/discussion/if-i-am-being-told-to-check-this-entry-and-it-says-state-tax-refund-worksheet-item-q-line-2-what-do/00/1050474

Basically going to the Forms view allows me to see the worksheet with errors (red exclamation mark), and in the form itself, it describes what each of the Item Q means, they are all from Schedule A.

I went back to my 2018 form and that same line was blank as well. Q Line 1.  Any suggestions.  I dont' recall TT giving me a warning when finalizing 2018.  Now I'm stuck trying to finish 2019 tax year and not sure what to do - just put in zero?

I just looked back 3 years of returns and Line 7 Q 1 are all just blank but I never got a warning about it until trying to finish out my tax year 2019 return. Searched on Google and just brings me back to this link LOL

@zenmster If your prior years are blank (or $0) you did not Itemize.

If you are not itemizing in 2020, use blank (or $0).

Per Expert Julie S:

"This error refers to the amount on line 5c of your Schedule A, which is state and local personal property taxes. That is usually the deductible amount of your vehicle registration fees.

If you did not itemize, you can enter 0. If you did itemize, just check your Schedule A and fill in the number you had on line 5c."

are you saying I pull that info from line 5c off of my 2018 tax year return? I'm def itemizing.  Trying to finish my 2019 tax year taxes.

Yes. If you are working on a 2019 income tax return, TurboTax will need information from your 2018 tax return to determine whether part or all of your 2018 state refund should be added into your 2019 income as a taxable refund. Line 5c is state and local personal property taxes.

Line 5c of my current tax return i'm trying to finish or the previous year?

Previous year.  Per Expert JulieS:

"This error refers to the amount on line 5c of your Schedule A for the prior year, which is state and local personal property taxes. That is usually the deductible amount of your vehicle registration fees.

If you did not itemize, you can enter 0. If you did itemize, just check your Schedule A from the prior year and fill in the number you had on line 5c."

hi what if the 2018 entry is blank - not even a "0"? I didn't bypass/ignore any "fix error" directions since 2013 so I don't know why this is happening now.  Ugh

Hi Just saw this.  I've been itemizing since 2012 using turbo tax - this is what's very confusing to me.  I didn't have an error last year and that same line item is also blank (not even a "0").  Suggestions?  can I go to another part of my tax year 2018 return to use in my tax year 2019 return?

so if this information line item is BLANK in my tax year 2018 return can I just enter the vehicle reg fee here in my 2019 tax year return?  I'm assuming this is personal reg fee and not my business vehicle reg fee (?)

WORKSHEET ITEM Q LINE 1

The program is asking how much you reported as state and local taxes paid on the previous year return, in your case, on your 2018 return.

Since you indicated that you did itemize deductions on the 2018 return, look for your Schedule A which would have been included with your tax return. The number is on Schedule A line 5b.

Look at the box on line 5a, is it checked? If it is, your refund is not taxable and you are done with that section.

If the box is checked, you may need to claim part of the refund as income.

The amount of the refund may or may not be considered as taxable income on your current tax year federal return.

IS IT TAXABLE INCOME? that depends.

IF you claimed the Standard Deduction on your previous tax year, no, it is NOT taxable. It won't be reported on your current tax year return.

IF you Itemized Deductions on your previous tax year return, it COULD be taxable income on your current tax return.

Did you use the State Income tax paid as a deduction? Then no, it isn't. (Box by line 5a is checked)

Did you use the State Sales tax paid as a deduction? Then yes, at least part may be taxable. (Box by line 5a ix not checked)

TurboTax is asking about your numbers from your previous tax return so it can determine if the 1099-G is taxable on your current tax year return.

Worksheet Item Q line 2 is on previous year Schedule A line 5c.

I hope this clears things up for you.

@reneevyne The State Tax Refund Worksheet, Item Q, Line 1, is for Property Tax from your 2019 return.

If you did not itemize deductions in 2019, just enter $0 or leave blank.

If you did itemize in 2019, enter the amount from Schedule A of your 2019 return.

Hello @MarilynG1 MarilynG1

I am stuck at this point as well.  I see different answers here, but what should I enter here and where does that info come from?
