HOME HEATING CREDIT SUBMISSION

When I e-filed my MI taxes, did the Home Heating credit form submit as well, or do I need to mail that in separately? Turbotax went through and had me enter all my information for this credit. It revealed that I am eligible for the HHC, yet I cannot find it in my printable records or find it to view electronically. Please help, I need to have this credit applied to assist with heating/energy costs.

Your Michigan Home Heating credit would have been on Form MI-1040CR-7. This Form is supported in TurboTax for e-filing and print. If you do not see a Form MI-1040CR-7 in your state return documents, then you can mail the form separately.

Although the State of Michigan suggests it be e-filed with your Michigan tax return, you should not amend your 2020 return because this credit does not flow to your MI-1040. State law requires the Michigan Department of Treasury to issue your credit in the form of a State of Michigan Energy Draft, which you can only use the draft to pay heat bills.

Please keep in mind that you qualify for a home heating credit if all of the following apply:

  • You own or were contracted to pay rent and occupied a Michigan homestead
  • You were NOT a full-time student who was claimed as a dependent on another person’s return
  • You did NOT live in college or university operated housing for the entire year
  • You did NOT live in a licensed care facility for the entire year
  • Your income was within the limits in Table A and Table B (please click on the links to see the income limits)

Note: You may be required to submit documentation to support your claim.

To access the form, please see 2020 MI 1040CR-7. The due date for Form MI-1040CR-7 is September 30, 2021.

Unfortunately, we cannot see your return as this is a public forum.

If you have already filed your tax return, you can look at a copy of your tax return by following the steps in the link below.

Printing a copy of your return after e-file

Look for Form MI-1040-CR-7 as mentioned by lenaH above.

If you see it, the credit was included in your return as filed.

If you do not see it, it was not included in your Michigan return and you would need to amend your return to include it.

We don't have access to your return.

Check if Form MI-1040CR-7, Home Heating Credit Claim is included with your state return.

  1. Select Tax Tools from the left menu then Tools.
  2. Next, select View Tax Summary in the pop-up
  3. Select delete a form.
  4. Scroll down and check if the form is included.

The Home Heating Credit is a way the State of Michigan helps you pay some of your heating expenses if you are a qualified Michigan homeowner or renter. You should complete the Home Heating Credit Claim MI-1040CR-7 to see if you qualify for the credit. The deadline for submitting this form is September 30, 2022.

You may qualify for a home heating credit if all of the following apply:

  • You own or were contracted to pay rent and occupied a Michigan homestead
  • You were NOT a full-time student who was claimed as a dependent on another person's return
  • You did NOT live in college or university operated housing for the entire year
  • You did NOT live in a licensed care facility for the entire year
  • Your income was within the limits in Table A and Table B

No one from TurboTax has access to your tax return.  You have to look at your state tax return to see if you completed the the state form for the credit.

To access your current year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

When you sign onto your online account and land on the Tax Home web page, scroll down and click on Add a state.

This will take you back to the 2021 online tax return.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen.  Then click on Print Center.  Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return.  Choose the option Include government and TurboTax worksheets
