For box 6 for the 1099-nec it is requiring me to add a state number but my 1099-form is blank on box 6. I live in Texas which does not have a state tax. So my question is, what can I do to fix this issue and get past this screen as I cannot proceed without adding something in box 6.

If you live in a state that does not have an income tax, leave Boxes 6 and 7 empty.

I am in Massachusetts, what is the code  for box 6 for Massachusetts?

The code is not general for all of Massachusetts; it would be a unique registration number with the tax authorities in the state of MA. So, assuming your box 6 is empty:

If there was no state tax withheld (Box 5 - also blank) of your 1099-NEC, then please leave Boxes 6 and 7 empty.

If there was state tax withheld (Box 5 - has values) of your 1099-NEC, and there is no state ID number in Box 6, then you can use the Payer's TIN located under the Payer's name (in the upper left corner) for your box 6 entry, as a workaround.

I'm having the same problem: a 1099-NEC that has no state tax ID number but TurboTax wants something in the box 6 field.  I contacted the employer, a non-profit, who says there is no state ID number.  Employer provided some kind of ID number, which I entered.  TurboTax seemed happy as long as field wasn't blank.  No state tax was withheld, so blank there ($0) is accurate.  Other discussions said to just put the Federal ID number there.

Any assistance appreciated.

Enter the federal employer identification number (FEIN) in the state field.  Do not put any dash and leave no spaces between the numbers. This should allow you to move forward and there's no need for concern.

Please update here if you would like further assistance and we will help.

Thanks.  I will proceed as you recommend.

I do have to wonder though why TurboTax is requiring information to be entered other than as provided on a document.  It's not the first time I've experienced this with TT, usually around 1099s.  If nothing else, provide an "Accept as entered" option.
