Alternative Minimum tax

I'm filing MN taxes and the box TT will not let me uncheck the box for "paid Minnesota alternative tax in a prior year."

This leads to other questions pertaining to documents I don't have because I've never paid the MN alternative tax.

How do I get this box to uncheck?

Can you please check to see if you are selecting the AMT for your Federal return? If so, this may be carrying over to the state return.

Thank you for the answer.

I have not selected the AMT on the federal return.  Neither my husband not I have ever done the AMT.

The same thing is happening to me as well. I also have never done the AMT and did not select it for the federal portion of my taxes.

The Paid Minnesota alternative minimum tax question creates Form M1MTC. Try deleting this form to clear the check box.

  • Click on Tax Tools on the left column,
  • Click Tools,
  • Click Delete a form in the center,
  • Scroll down to the Minnesota return section
  • Find Form M1MTC. Click Delete.

I am having the same issue where the check box for "Paid Minnesota alternative minimum tax in a prior year" is automatically checked on the Minnesota Credits page. I deselect it and check none of the above and move on to the next page but the next page is titled "Minnesota Alternative Minimum Tax" and leads to the next page asking questions about form 6251 (which I have never filled out). When I go back to the Minnesota Credits page, the box for "Paid Minnesota alternative minimum tax in a prior year" is checked again and the "None of the above" box is now unchecked.

I tried deleting the M1MTC form but that has not fixed the issue. I have filed through TurboTax online since 2015 and have not ever run into this issue. It seems to be a bug with the Minnesota Credits page of the filing process.

Deleting form M1MTC did not work.  I have never paid Alternative Minimum Tax.  It appears to be a bug in the program and needs an update.  Very frustrating.

I did not select AMT for my federal return.  The program needs an update.  This is very frustrating.

We are having the same issue. We deleted the form M1MTC, but that did not resolve the issue.

I am having the exact same problem and am basically unable to continue to file my taxes as a result unless I go to another service. Fix it soon or I'm going elsewhere.

None of the suggestions you have made corrects the problem.  Please tell whoever can fix this to fix it. I think all of us who have cited this problem deserve a status report on the progress of getting this corrected.

Have you received an answer that worked?

Your suggestion does not work.  I have never paid AMT.  I still can't uncheck the "Paid Alternative Minimum Tax in a Previous Year" box in the Minnesota credits section.  Who can help us with this problem?  Please help!

Another MN resident here having the exact same problem.

I have never paid AMT and TurboTax is not allowing me to uncheck the box saying I did.

I have no form 6251 or anything else.

I have been using TurboTax for a decade and never had this issue until now.

@ErnieS0  @BrandiLO I am having the same problem. AMT box auto-selects even when I uncheck the box. I am also unable to delete form M1MTC. Have never filed AMT and don't know why this is happening.

I had the same issue.  But since I couldn't uncheck the box and going back didn't help, I tried going forward.  Here are my responses.

  • Are line 2h, lines 2k through 2t, and line 3 of your 2019 federal Form 6251 blank? I responded with Yes
  • 2019 Federal Adjusted Gross Income (from 2019 Federal Form 1040, line 8a) On the 2019 form 1040 the AGI was on line 8b so I entered that amount
  • Prior Year Credit Carryover I responded with zero

The system responded "Based on your entries, you don't have a Minnesota Alternative Minimum Tax Credit for 2020"

A couple of extra notes.  First, I made sure that my MN Refund number at the top of the screen didn't change during this.  If it had changed, then I would be concerned.  Second, when I print and file my MN return, I plan to remove the Form M1MTC (if it prints) before I put it in the mail.

Hope that helps.

I was on the phone with a Turbo Tax expert last week.  He was very understanding.  After 90 minutes he suggested doing what kimnor states in the message from 1-30-2021.  I saw the same error with the Federal AGI on line 8b instead of 8a.  It worked but it's frustrating.  I strongly suggested to the tech person at Turbo Tax to get a corrective update but if that isn't possible in the immediate future to at least post an update on this site.

I'm going to wait a couple weeks before filing my fed return.

I waited six days, and tried again.  Turbo Tax automatically loaded any new updates, but the AMT problem with MN is STILL PERSISTING.  again, unable to unclick the box saying I paid AMT (i did not)

PLEASE FIX THIS. It is beyond frustrating and is CLEARLY happening to many other MN residents.

I am having the same issue with the tax files I'm trying to file. I did the same thing but I am not comfortable with this solution. This is a glitch in the Turbo Tax for this year. It needs to be updated to not pre check the box.

Great News!  The 2-1-2021 update corrected the alternative minimum tax glitch.

I checked for updates in Turbo Tax on 2/13/2021 and downloaded the 2/10/2021 update. That update fixed my issues. After downloading the update I opened Turbo Tax and walked through the Minnesota tax return from the beginning. I no longer saw the screen that automatically checked the AMT option. Instead, I was asked if I ever claimed MN AMT in the past. I chose 'No' and was able to complete my tax return.

@jrice56 : An update on 2/10/2021 resolved the issue for me. I use the version that was installed via download code (not the online version). I checked for updates in Turbo Tax and downloaded the update. I assume it is fixed for Turbo Tax online as well.

@johnlacey217_2

Can you clarify what you want to do? AMT is used in many places for many things. How can we help you?
