Why does my IRA distribution show Taxable as being higher than the actual total withdrawal?

turbo tax added an additional $5K to my IRA distribution total is what my 1099-R read but Taxable being reported is higher than that.

If 1099-R result makes no sense, delete the 1099-R and try again to enter it correctly.

Did you import the 1099R?  It could have imported wrong.  Delete it and enter it again manually.   Or you typed an amount wrong.  Did you get any other 1099R forms?

The total shows correctly. It's the section that says Taxable that increased. I uploaded it from a PDF. I don't understand why taxable would go higher.

The taxable amount on 1040 line 4b is 5,000 higher?  The 1099R may have imported wrong.  That’s common.  Delete it and enter it again Manually.  That usually fixes it.

IRA goes on line 4a and 4b.  Line 5 is for pensions and 401k distributions.  So first of all is your 1099R reported on the right lines?  Then it's ok for the "b" taxable line to be more than the "a" line.  Do you have more than 1 1099R?  If the taxable amount on line b is the same as the gross distribution on 1099R box 1 then it doesn't show the amount on "a".  The a line is not important.

Is your 5b just more than 5a  OR actually 5,000 more than the taxable amount from your 1099R box 2a?  The best way to fix it is to delete the 1099R and re enter it again  MANUALLY.

So it was my mistake calling it an IRA it is actually my 401K . I only have 1 1099R. I deleted and manually filled in the form on TT ( I made sure that box 1 and 2a from my 1099R matched exactly). It put my total (correct amount) in box 5a.. Then put a separate amount in box 5b ($5K higher). I went through my old taxes and then noticed it has been doing the same thing over the past several years.. Is there something with the "Pension and Annuity worksheet" that causes it to increase..? I cannot find where TT used or filled in a worksheet.

I have no idea how that's possible.  You might examine TurboTax's 1099-R Summary form.

Thanks all for your help. I think what I will do is try another tax system(taxslayer or someone) and see if it does it differently. Then if it does contact TT support..

Are you using the Online version or the Desktop program?  As long as you want to try other places you should try starting a new online return in a new account or start a new Desktop return without transferring from 2023.   It must be picking up something from prior  years.    Is there any other amounts on your  099R form in other boxes?  Like for the difference?
