In review it does not look as if I got the $4000 exemption which lowers the amount income that I was taxed on.

Not sure what you are seeing.  If your son is your dependent, then you should have a personal exemption of $4050 for him and one for yourself--these will show up on line 26 of a 1040A, or on line 42 of a 1040.

For Head of Household, your standard deduction is $9300.  On 1040A it will be on line 24; on 1040 it will be on line 40.

If your son is 17, you do not get the child tax credit for him.

You can preview the Form 1040 at any time 

Click on My Account at the top of the program screen. 

Click on Tools.  

Click on View Tax Summary.  

Click on Preview my 1040

my line 40 that Turbo Tax did has 14,447 not 9,300
