How to amend a W-4 form at the year-end using TurboxTax app?

Could I amend a W-4 form through TurboTax for this tax-year 2024?

This is the last pay-check before the retirement.

At the beginning of the year, the payroll office did not get my info into the W-4 form.

Now what actions could I take to amend the W-4 form in the tax-filing process? Thank you.

Thank you, DianeW.

Usually does W-4 form work for the FICA taxes?

No, it is strictly for the federal withholding. The FICA taxes have a set amount for each dollar of wages and is not part of your tax return.

  • 6.2% is social security tax
  • 1.45% is medicare tax

@MythSaraLee

The issue you might have, is that the payroll people may not be able to implement your changes this late in your pay cycle.  Normally, the change you make might only be applied to the next wage cycle.....which might not exist for you.

If it doesn't happen, you could just increase your withholding on your pension payments, to make up for what wasn't withheld in your working paychecks.

Use the W-4P to increase withholding from a pension

Usually does W-4 work for state and city taxes? Thanks~

Depends on the state involved....one normally interfaces with the pension provider to deal with State and Local tax withholding.   (A plain W-4 is only for working wages,,,not pensions)

My pension providers have only been allowing a standard amount to be withheld for Federal and state taxes (no local taxes in NC)... if I need more withholding for Fed or state(I do need more paid in during the year), so I end up making quarterly Estimated tax payments to the IRS and state....using the Online IRS Direct Pay site for the Feds, and my state's website for state quarterly estimated payments.

@SteamTrain  Thanks.

Then could I amend in TurboxTax app now, but mail the W4 form to the office later?

The W-4 preparation area in TTX is just a form you prepare/print and give to the payroll provider

...it is NOT an amendment as it has nothing to do with the current 2024 tax return....and will not affect 2024 taxes in any way.

@SteamTrain Thank you.

I am in NYC area. Does W4 work for NY state tax and NYC city tax?

Does NYC city tax charges to the SSA-1099 pensions?

I am a low-income employee.

Usually the pension will be sent through SSA-1099 forms but not 1099-R, right?

@SteamTrain Thanks~

Then could I use "Form 843" to amend the W-4 form for tax-year 2024?

Do I have some other options/forms for the state and city taxes and FICA taxes?

A Pension is NOT Social Security.

SS is only on SSA-1099, and doesn't usually deal with NY or NYC tax payments.

I don't know NY and NYC stuff....but a Google search indicates that NY does not tax Social Security.

Don't know about NY City.

When you start SS, they ask you how much you want withheld for Federal taxes.  I think they limit it to 7%, 10%, 12%, or 22% of the monthly amount.  They have a form W-4V for that when you first apply for SS:

I don't know how to use the 843 ...you need more of an expert than myself,  to figure out what you are attempting to do with it.

.......but the 843  can do absolutely nothing to change your 2024 W-4 itself....a W-4 is just a form you give to your employer to help them determine how much they should withhold for Federal taxes...and if they don't withhold enough, then it's on you to make up the difference.....either during the year......or at tax time.

@SteamTrain

Does W4 and Form IT-2104 work for now-tax-filing?

If no, could I use some other options or forms? Thanks~

Preparing a W-4 and IT-2104, printing and giving to the employer now would only affect future W-2 wage income for 2025.

You can do nothing for 2024 taxes with a 2024 W-4 or IT-2104.  Too late to change those.

@SteamTrain  Usually my workplace does not work for W-4 and IT-2104.

That is why I have to fill those now.

What other tables/forms/options could I for the 2024 tax-return?

@MythSaraLee

I don't understand.

You just enter your W-2 and all its box values into the tax software...and it will indicate whether you have any taxes due...or get a refund.

...BUT...

If you don't get a W-2, and are working as a contractor/Self-employed person......then, unless you can knowledgably fill out the Self-Employment income and expenses in the Online Premier software...then

you really need to go to a local tax preparer, and explain your situation and have them help you fill out your 2024 taxes.

It is too late to make any withholding adjustments on your 2024 tax return.   Any W-4s you give to your employer only affect future paychecks.   You can file your tax return without any w-4 forms; you don't need them.   For 2025, you have the options below:

W-4P - Complete Form W-4P so your payer can withhold the correct amount of federal income tax from your periodic pension, annuity (including commercial annuities), profit-sharing and stock bonus plan, or individual retirement arrangement (IRA) payments.

W-4V - Complete and give to SSA

@SteamTrain Thanks. It is the last W-2.

Just now we were researching the W-4.

I am here trying to find out some methods to address the around 30% withholding...

Are there some methods/forms/terms working for NYC city tax returns?

Please help~

Please clarify your situation.  You have asked a lot of questions about withholding forms.  What is it that you are trying to do?  Are you trying to get them to take less money out of future paychecks?  Or more money out of a pension?

@RobertB4444 Thanks.

My workplace does not work for W-4 forms.

And I need to pay insurances like family-leave and other funds automatically.

I am trying to find out some methods to use the insurances or amend the missing W-4.

And I want to know city-tax terms. So I could pay more federal tax and less city-tax.

Ok.  So there are no tax forms covering the insurance and things that your employer provides as a benefit.  You have to go to your employer's HR department to handle that.

If your workplace doesn't work for W4s why do you want to submit one at all?

In order to pay less tax to New York City then you need to move out of New York City.  All residents of New York City pay a little over 3% income tax to live there.

@RobertB4444 So we could not mask a W-4 here in our app. Thanks.

"a little over 3% income tax..." Thanks for the data.

If the AGI is around $10000 in 2024, will my city-rates still be the same thing 3%?

For taxable income up to $12,000 the New York City tax rate (added to the New York State tax rate) is 3.078%.
