Will Turbotax 2025 continue to work with Windows 10 next year?

Microsoft has indicated that Windows 10 will continue to operate but that it will not be supported. I am too old to change to Windows 11.

@JOCAR Yes, TurboTax Canada 2025 is fully compatible with Windows 10. While Intuit and Microsoft recommend Windows 11 for the best security and performance, Windows 10 remains a supported operating system for the 2025 software version.

Minimum Requirement: The baseline requirement is Windows 10 (64-bit).

Unsupported Versions: Older systems like Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 are strictly unsupported, and the software will not install on these platforms.

Selection During Launch: When you launch TurboTax Desktop, you may see recommendations to upgrade to Windows 11, but the software will function correctly on a fully updated version of Windows 10.

For the most current hardware and software specifications, refer to the official TurboTax Canada system requirements: How does the end of support for Windows 10 affect my TurboTax Desktop experience?

More worries. Will my last 6 years of Turbotax (Canada) returns, made with Windows 10, open with Windows 11 ?

Also, can you clarify how “Turbotax on line” would work on a desktop P.C. using Windows 10.

    or

Is "Turbotax on line" just the way of delivery into my desktop? I will be continuing to use Windows 10; too advanced in age to consider a replacement.

    Thank you,

You are forcing your users to update Windows version 10 to Windows 11. In order for me to do that I will need to update my machine, which is working perfectly well. Sooooo, if I want to continue using your product, I have to shell out lots of money and time. I take this as a very faintly disguised extortion on Microsoft part!! Outside of that I have used Windows 11 and find it to be a useless, overly bloated piece of crap. To say noting of the articles I have read about it. Does more harm then good. NO THANK YOU I will pass.

The only option you have given me is to do it on-line, something that I am NOT comfortable doing.

I assume you have written security code into that website, perhaps you can write security code into the Desktop version. Or just let your users own web security take care of it.

Same here. The one and only thing I use windows for is Turbotax and that is now officially over as of now. I will just use spreadsheets. If they cant put security into the app itself, and need the OS,  then its not secure anyway.

P.S. unless these idiots are unaware many of us cant even upgrade to Win 11 because of the TPM requirement which means a new PC.

P.P.S If intuit ever gets hacked I am sure there is no recourse except one of the useless 1 year security watch programs and sorry email. NO THANKS

That's sounds like a BOT response if i ever heard one. So how does Intuit use TPM 2.0 to secure my data? Most of the MS TPM requirements are to prevent OS piracy, ensure (MS) trusted applications, and someone from stealing my PC.

You do realize that Microsoft has extended free security updates through October 13, 2026, right?

    Right?

I was told by Microsoft(Oct. 23/2025) that I will have another year of updates for my Windows 10. So the updates will now end on October 2026. So my question is, will my computer be able to run Turbo Tax Version 2025 for the tax year 2025? My computer cannot be upgraded  to Windows 11 because of hardware requirements. I would like to get at least one more year of using Turbo Tax. Thank you.

My question is: if I jailbreak my Windows 10 computer and Force Windows 11 onto it, will TT2025 run?

    The download page currently has the following statement under system requirements;

    "Operating systems
Windows 10 or later (Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 are not supported)

Can someone provide an unambiguous response to the Windows 10 / Windows 11 conundrum?

Software will function correctly on a fully updated version of Windows 10.  This statement is a flat out lie.

I just downloaded it for the desktop and it DOES NOT EVEN LET YOU INSTALL IT ON WINDOWS 10.  No message about security etc.  Gave me two options:  Turbox Tax Online or Upgrade your PC to Windows 11.  Thanks for stealing my money.

@teachb A change was made due to customer feedback, so while we still recommend using Windows 11, TurboTax 2025 will run on Windows 10.

yeah they started in a very complex spreadsheet then developed the software -- I helped a bit as i was i computer science.  It is sad that we are being pushed away.  Easy to say "buy a computer with W11".    Kinda neat to find someone who remembers those original versions.

Before TT I used GenuTax.  Of course I contacted them this year and asked if their package will work when 2026 tax time arrives.  They replied on Jan 29, 2026 . . . :

GenuTax Standard software will continue to support Windows 10 as long as possible.

However, when Microsoft withdraws critical security updates for Windows 10, it will no longer be considered a secure platform for filing your tax return, and our company may have to stop supporting Windows 10 at that time.

I suspect W11 will affect all but ONLINE Tax filing in future.

As for replacing my MS Surface laptop circa Dec 2019, I'm having irritating keyboard problems so next laptop will NOT be from MS.  I'm looking at Lenovo THINKBOOK  (not Thinkpad, too $$$)

@JOCAR, I appreciate your feedback, and it has been noted. I forwarded this to the appropriate department so that it can be updated on our website.

To clarify, TurboTax 2025 can be installed on either Windows 10 or Windows 11, but we recommend using Windows 11.

I may have to use another Tax Program after 10 years using TT.  I have to buy a new Laptop in order to have W11 because I can't upgrade to W11 on my 6 year old laptop.  I'm 80 and don't need the aggravation and FEAR of learning W11.

I'm praying TT2025 and NETFILE will work smoothly this year.  As for 2026 tax year, I may go back to GENUTAX, one I used before TT.  It is FREE but users typically make a donation.

One last comment, I've started my 2025 by entering medical expenses.  It is PAINFUL process!  One enters the total cost, enter the re-imbursement.  What is missing on this SCREEN is the difference between the total cost less the re-imbursement.  One has to click on DONE and that's where I can see IF the amount I actually paid is correct.  IF it doesn't match my spreadsheet then I have to EDIT the entry and make the correct.  IF the amount I paid (claiming) was on the original screen where I enter the total cost and the re-imbursement.  IF I made a mistake here I should know it immediately and after selecting DONE and then seeing there's an error.  I had to check every single entry before moving on to entering the next medication 20 times.

    Thanks

@louroberts I will pass on your comments & suggestions to our product development team. Thank you for your input.

Regarding the medical expenses - You can group together your expenses - ex: If you went to the pharmacy on June 17 and got a prescription for $100 and another one for $50, you can just enter $150 for prescriptions. Or you can enter the total amount of your medical receipts instead of entering them one at a time if you know that they all fall within the 12 month claim period that you intend to specify.

Also, you don't have to use the "less: reimbursement:" box. If you already have a spreadsheet that shows you what the medical expenses were after you were reimbursed, you can just put that in the "Amount" box. Ex: if you paid $300 for a dentist visit, but your insurance reimbursed you $200, then you can just enter the $100 you paid out of pocket as the amount of medical expense.
