It says t needs "A link to Schedule C or another form". I put all information on my 1099-MISC but it still says I need to complete all of the info. What should I do more?

What box is the amount in on the 1099-MISC?  What is the purpose of the 1099-MISC?

Thanks for the reply. It was Box 3 Other Income and the purpose of 1099-MISC was fellowship in graduate school.

First, you will need to delete the original 1099-MISC you entered so you can start over.  Follow the steps in the following FAQ to delete a form:

https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/3288508

Here are the steps to enter your 1099-MISC as Other Income and NOT self-employment (Schedule C):

·         Type 1099 misc in Search (upper right of program) and select the Jump to 1099 misc link

·         Enter your 1099-MISC with Box 3

·         Describe the reason for this 1099-MISC, enter Fellowship

·         Does one of these uncommon situations apply? – check None of these apply

·         Did the fellowship involve work that’s like your main job? – check No, it didn’t involve work like my main job

·         How often did you get income for fellowship? – check I got it in 2017

·         Did the fellowship involve an intent to earn money? – check No, it didn’t involve an intent to earn money

·         TurboTax will now place this in Other Income (rather than self-employment income which requires Schedule C)

NOTE:  If you need additional assistance, please comment and I will assist further.

I had the same issue, it said " A link to schedule C or another form". However my amount is in box 7 and it's still saying I need to review the information. What do I do next?

A box 7 entry would normally mean you have self-employment income so you would need to report that on a schedule C. Do you consider the activity to be self-employment income, or should it be "other income"?

Hi there,

I am experiencing this same problem. My income is shown in box 7 and I do consider it to be self-employment. Do I need to file a Schedule C and, if so, where can I find one?

Yes, Self-Employment will require a Schedule C.

If there are no expenses you need to claim, you can use a simple schedule c and TurboTax Deluxe.

If you need to report business expenses, dedications, or assets, you will be prompted to upgrade to Self-Employed or Home and Business.

Click Federal

Click Wages & Income

Click “See All Income” if needed

Scroll down to SELF-EMPLOYMENT and enter the 1099-MISC

Also, it is not my business, and I am confused as to why it popping up in this way.

If it shows up in Box 7, it is considered a contract type payment that needs to be reported as self-employment income even though you may not think of it as such.

I am having an issue with this schedule C issue.  It is telling me it needs further review.  All questions have been answered, but it is saying that is needs a link to the schedule C.

Suggestions?

I am also having the same issue - it says I need to "Double click to link to Schedule C".

I don't know what to put in the box (C7N1), and no matter what I put it tells me there is an error. I've gone back and deleted the 1099-NEC info and re-entered it, and that didn't seem to have any affect.

Income reported on Form 1099-NEC must be reported on Schedule C, the program is trying to link these two forms together to be sure that it is reported correctly and on the right form.

Revisit the section where you entered the Form 1099-NEC if you entered it on its own and delete that entry, by following these steps:

  1. Open TurboTax.
  2. On the top right corner of TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner).
  3. Type in “1099-NEC” (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find),
  4. Click on the “Jump to 1099-NEC” link.

This will bring you a summary of all Form 1099-NEC that you have entered.  Click Delete or the Trash can icon next to each one.

Next, you will re-enter the Form 1099-NEC as part of the Schedule C so that the income is reported directly as part of your Business Income and Expenses and within the correct form and section of your return.

Follow these steps to go to the Schedule C section of your return:

  1. On the top right corner of TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner).
  2. Type in “schedule c” (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find).
  3. Click on the “Jump to schedule c” link.

If you already have created a Schedule C in your return, click on edit and go to the section to Add Income.  This is where you will re-enter the Form 1099-NEC.

If you do not already have a Schedule C in your return, follow the prompts and enter the information about your work/business for which you received the Form 1099-NEC.  Then continue through that section to Add Income and enter the Form 1099-NEC along with any additional income you received for that business.

Once you have completed this, the error should be eliminated.

That worked! When I clicked "jump to 1099-NEC" I could see that the same income was entered in multiple times, and that was what was throwing off the program. Thank you.

I did all of this several times and the issue is not resolved. Could it be that I am counting it as a side job rather than a business?  If that is so, where would I put the income instead?

I found and resolved the issue

I still cannot resolve mine. How did you do it?

Delete the 1909-MISC you have entered and reenter it.  To do this, please follow these instructions:

TurboTax Online

  1. While in your return, click on Tax Tools > Tools (in the black bar at the side of your screen).
  2. In the Tools Center, under Other helpful links click on Delete a form.
  3. Click Delete next to the form you want to delete and follow the onscreen instructions.
  4. Once you have finished deleting the desired form(s) click the Continue with My Return box (in the lower right of your screen).

TurboTax CD/Download

  1. Go into Forms Mode by clicking on the Forms icon in the top right of the blue bar
  2. In the Forms in My Return list on the left, click on the form you wish to open and delete.
  3. Click on the Delete Form box at the bottom of the screen.
  4. To return to the interview, click on the Step-By-Step icon in the top right of the blue bar.

Then you can re-enter the 1099-MISC.  If you received the 1099-MISC for non-employee compensation the income should have been reported on Form 1099-NEC instead of a 1099-MISC.

To enter the income in box 7 of the 1099-MISC you received:

  1. Click Wages & Income
  2. Under the Self-Employment section, click the Start/Revisit box next to Self-employment income and expenses.
  3. Continue through the screens, entering the requested information.
  4. On the screen, Let's get some details from, XX's 1099-NEC, enter the amount from box 7 of the 1099-MISC in Box 1 of Form 1099-NEC.

If you received the 1099-MISC for something other than non-employee compensation, you can enter the 1099-MISC in TurboTax as "Other Common Income," which is reported on line 8 of 1040 Schedule 1 and will not generate Schedule C or SE tax.  Please use the following steps:

  1. Click on Federal > Wages & Income.
  2. Scroll down to the Other Common Income section.
  3. Click on the Start/Revisit box next Form 1099-MISC.
  4. On the screen Did you get a 1099-MISC?  click on the Yes button.
  5. On the next screen, Let's get the info from your 1099-MISC, enter the information from the 1099-MISC.
  6. On the following screens, answer the following questions:
    • Did it involve work that's like your main job? No.
    • You got it in 2020
    • No, it didn't involve an intent to earn money

 7.  Continue through the rest of the interview screens. The income will appear as Other Income.

I'm having the same problem. It was Box 3 Other Income and the purpose of 1099-MISC was working as a GrubHub delivery driver (Foodshare). Do I also delete it and start over to submit as Other Income instead?

Expert Alumni

You are working as Grub Hub driver to make money. Unless you also have a W2 form them, this is not a bonus  or other payment. This is your job and this is your income. You must pay Social Security and Medicare tax on these wages. The only way to trigger the SE tax is inside a business return.

You will file a schedule C. The program will calculate the self-employment tax for you and add it to your return. Inside the business return, it will ask you to add income. Select the MISC and add yours there. Delete it anywhere else in the return.

You will need your business income, the 1099MISC and any expenses. The program will walk you through. You will also want to visit the personal section on Tax relief related to COVID 19. You may qualify for additional credits there.

  • If you do not have expenses, you can go with Deluxe.
  • If you have expenses, you will need the Self-Employed version.

the only box that has numbers is my box one. Nothing else. I know schedule C is for expenses and I defiantly had a lot of those that were covered but it isn't listed anywhere

@RustyTheNub If you want to enter a 1099-NEC with an amount in Box 1 as Self-Employment Income, type 'schedule c' in the Search area, then click on 'Jump to schedule c'.

If you have not yet set up your Business, you will answer some questions about your business.

If you have already set up your Business, choose Edit/Review to add your Business Income from your 1099-NEC.  Then scroll down to Business Expenses to add your expenses.

I have tried this method multiple times, and I am still receiving the error. Is there something else I should be doing?
