It's been more than 10 weeks and the IRS is still playing with my **bleep** money

I never got either of the first two stimulus checks, so I claimed them both with the recovery rebate.

My e-file was accepted on March 6th, and I got my state return almost immediately.

After waiting for more than a month after that, I managed to get someone from the IRS on the phone using the taxpayer advocate service.

I had to wait on hold for 45 minutes to be told there was some unidentified error and that I would have to wait up to 10 weeks from the date of filing.

The 10 week date passed on May 15th, and the WMR tool is still saying the same X:

"Your tax return is still being processed. A refund date will be provided when available."

Now neither the IRS nor the Taxpayer Advocate Service are answering the phone.

What do now?

You continue to wait, as are lots of other folks (some longer than you).  Congress continues to heap more and more tasks on the IRS, but with no additional funding to fulfill them.  See:

I did turbo tax. It was accepted March 3. I have not received it. I now get an email saying they are going to take $176.00 dollars out of my checking account. This is so wrong. I didn’t receive it and I don’t have extra money in my checking account. I’m on a fixed income and can hardly make ends meet. They should not take it until I receive my refund then deduct it. I will never do turbo tax again. I also did not agree to this amount to do my taxes. I spoke to someone snd they said they would take care of it. This turbo tax is a big joke.

I am going through that now. I filed april 7. No updates and 3 hour hold time 2 to 3 times a week. I am now 48/50 days vs. The "21 days or less" I am a frontline worker and still traveling to other states thats in need of respiratory therapist due to COVID19. Had to take some time off 3 months. No income and really really broke af. I dont have the money for my rental payment and single mother of 3.

Now i have turbo tax wanting to take out the 120 fee that should have been covered by my tax return.

I filed and it said IRS accepted on March 1, 2021. I also got an email from Turbo Tax saying they were going to take 120.00 out of my checking account and I haven't received my refund yet either. Complete BS!! But I just looked checked my Where's my refund and it is saying my refund is set to be directed deposited on May 26, 2021 which is tomorrow. I hope Turbo Tax isn't still going to take the 120.00 out of my account! They should receive their 120.00  when my refund is deposited shouldn't they?

I guarantee you that, just like mine was-stuck in id verify department.   Call the id verify number 10000 or more times, get through on close to final attempt, tell them you received the idverify letter code 5071, and i promise if you complete the idverify you will have refund in less than 2 weeks.  Promise.

I e-filed on March 15th and the IRS accepted my return.  My husband passed in August of COVID and I could really use the money.  I have tried for hours each day to reach someone to no avail.  I too am being told that they are going to deduct my payment from my checking account without my having received my refund.  I could really use some help to resolve this however I do not know where to turn.

I have the same problem. I filed the 1st week of March it was accepted like March 13th by the irs as was my state taxes. Like you the 10 weeks is long past and still no nothing. What the hell is the since in using TurboTax to file taxes and pay them to do them if they can't fix a problem to get people their refunds. I could save myself a couple hundred bucks doin my own taxes and wouldn't have any longer a wait for my returns. How do I cancel the agreement with TurboTax? Its f**ked up ya can't even talk to a real person and get answers. Think im going to contact a lawyer, cuz so far TurboTax ain't done **bleep**. Free file woulda been better and probably quicker. Anybody got any answers?

TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer.  “21 days”  is not a promise from TurboTax or the IRS.   Many refunds are taking longer during the pandemic.  The IRS is backlogged —-they are still trying to process millions of 2019 returns; they received millions of e-filed on the day they opened for 2020 returns, and now they are burdened with sending out another round of stimulus checks.

Some delays are resulting from incorrect amounts that folks entered for stimulus checks they received.   Many people have been confused by the recovery rebate credit and completed it incorrectly.  The IRS may delay your refund while they cross-check to see what you received.  Some refunds are delayed because of the tax law changes that went into effect recently.   If your return has unemployment or the premium tax credit on it, that may be delaying it.

First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 34of your 2020 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

To track your state refund:

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1901548-why-do-some-refunds-take-longer-than-others

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

From this IRS website - https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-operations-during-covid-19-mission-critical-functions-continue

As of May 15, 2021, we had 300,000 individual tax returns received prior to 2021 in the processing pipeline. Including current year returns, as of May 15, 2021, we had 16.4 million unprocessed individual returns in the pipeline. Unprocessed returns include those requiring correction to the Recovery Rebate Credit amount or validation of 2019 income used to figure the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC). This work does not require us to correspond with taxpayers but does require special handling by an IRS employee so, in these instances, it is taking the IRS more than 21 days to issue any related refund. If, as a result, a correction is made to any RRC, EITC or ACTC claimed on the return, the IRS will send taxpayers an explanation. Taxpayers are encouraged to continue to check Where’s My Refund? for their personalized refund status and can review Tax Season Refund Frequently Asked Questions.

I know the reason my & many others tax returns are delayed is because of the recovery rebate tax credit. Those are automatically moved to the ‘errors’ department, and they have to be completed MANUALLY. I found this out when I FINALLY was able to speak to an actual person from the IRS. Can the recovery rebate credit be removed to speed up my return?

Level 15
Jun 4, 2021 6:38:44 AM

@Metalman_ct No you cannot remove the recovery rebate credit.   You cannot change anything on a return that has been filed and accepted.   Sorry but all you can do is wait out the processing.

What about using a 1040x form? Isn’t that what that’s for?

Level 15
Jun 4, 2021 6:56:08 AM

@Metalman_ct NO!!!!!!    A 1040X is used to amend a fully processed tax return.    It takes the IRS about six months or more to process a Form 1040X right now.    Using the amendment process to "speed up" your refund would have the opposite effect.   It would put two returns from the same Social Security number into the system at the same time---causing confusion and more delays.   Do not attempt to amend your tax return in a misguided attempt to get your refund quicker.

I used TurboTax Deluxe to do our taxes. We filed Married jointly. We have only pension and social security income so it wasn't a complicated return. TurboTax indicated that our return had no issues during the review. The federal return was accepted on 2/25/2021. As of this date, over 15 weeks, the IRS site says our return is still processing. I've heard more excuses than peanuts in a bag about why they are late but this is beyond ridiculous. Even though I have always trusted TurboTax, always pay my taxes, and don't try to scam the IRS for more money than I'm due in the back of my mind I'm thinking it's been so long maybe mistakes were made and now the IRS is coming for me. That may sound paranoid but years ago the IRS made a mistake and basically accused me of tax fraud. I was able to provide the documentation proving  they messed up but it was no fun dealing with these people even if your 100% in the right.
