It is asking for my state of residence but I was on a visa and have since left the US and moved back to Canada. How do I change this option?

It is asking what your state of residence was while living in the states.

If you were in the U.S. for part of 2023, choose the state you lived in.   You may need to prepare a part-year return for that state, depending on whether it is a state that has a state income tax.

If you were only here for part of the year (and on a visa) are you sure you meet the substantial presence test to file a 1040? With limited information in your post, it seems like you need to file a 1040-NR. The NR for Non Resident. You can't do this through TurboTax (it's unsupported). Contact Sprintax, they should be able to assist you.

Sorry here’s some more info:

I lived in the New York for 3 years, filed taxes there in 2021, 2022, and now 2023

I moved back to Canada on August 1st

it is asking for the state of residence as of December 31st, 2023. When I was already back in Canada. Some others are suggesting a partial year return? Just wondering If I should put “foreign or US possession” a little unsure on what that option actually encompasses.

Thanks for the additional information.

Yes, you should list your address as foreign or US possession

You should also look into the IRS details on Dual Status Aliens.

https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/taxation-of-dual-status-individuals

You might find that you need/ it is beneficial for you rifle both a 1040 and a 1040-NR.

Again, I recommend you contact Sprintax.

Yes, in the Personal Info section, you list your Current Address.

If you earned income in New York while living there from January 1st, 2023 through July 31, 2023, you would file a Part-Year NY State Return.
