Did you send out your return by mail?

If you are expecting a refund you can check the IRS website, Where's My Refund? 28 days after mailing your tax return.

If you are not expecting a refund tracking you can use the IRS new online transcript request option to tell when your return has been processed. Once the return shows up in the transcript request the IRS has received and processed your return. Before that time it will show that you have not filed for the year. You can also determine when the IRS processes your payment (if a tax payment was sent/due) by clicking this link: http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/Get-Transcript

After 21 days have passed you may also call the IRS customer service at 1-800-829-1040 to inquire the status of your tax return.

Can I get my refund direct deposited if it hasn't been mailed out yet?

Once a return has been accepted by the IRS you cannot change how you want to receive your refund.

Paper tax returns have not been processed by the IRS for several months since the start of the pandemic.

To check your refund status use this IRS website - https://www.irs.gov/refunds

Go to his IRS website for information on paper tax returns - https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-operations-during-covid-19-mission-critical-functions-continue

We’re experiencing delays in processing paper tax returns due to limited staffing. If you already filed a paper return, we will process it in the order we received it.

Do not file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return or your Economic Impact Payment.

My status said my tax return check should’ve been here by the 5th but I didn’t get it, how long should I wait?

TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer.  Many refunds are taking longer during the pandemic.

First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

If accepted, they try to process it within three weeks but it can be longer.  if you have earned income credit or additional child tax credit, it will be at least the end of February before you see your refund, due to the PATH act that requires that they hold your refund longer.

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 34of your 2020 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

To track your state refund:

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1901548-why-do-some-refunds-take-longer-than-others

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.
