The IRS started processing returns later than in prior years and as such has a backlog to work through. They also just recently started processing returns claiming EIC and/or ACTC.

It simply means that your e-filed return is being processed and that the government hasn't approved or rejected it yet.  Sometimes return status does not update for several days or even longer.

During this time, the government reviews your refund (processing).
During the review process, they look for math errors on your return (extremely rare in TurboTax) and they also check if you owe back taxes, unpaid child support, or other debts.

If they need to make any corrections, they may offset (reduce) your refund. In some cases, the correction might even increase your refund.

Once that part's done, the government approves your refund, which means it's ready to be deposited or sent.

It can take up to 21 calendar days after acceptance for the IRS to issue your refund, although most refunds go more quickly than that, while a small handful may take a bit longer.

Please see the following regarding possible delays for returns claiming EIC or Additional Child Tax Credit:  EIC/ACTC potential delay .

Should I get a tax advocate? Will that help the IRS release my refund quicker ?

@Ash16 First, if it's been less than 21 days, continue to track your refund status via the IRS Where's My Refund site.  If more than 21 days have passed since your return was accepted, you should call the IRS directly to inquire about the delay of your refund.  Go here for tips on reaching a live IRS agent when you call.

The Taxpayer Advocate Service is there to help you with tax problems you can't solve on your own.  If you find this pertains to you, the service could possibly assist you in getting your refund quicker than going at it on your own.  However, we cannot say for certain.  Here is the link to find out more:  https://taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov/
