I have a notice from the IRS that my refund was applied toward a past due IRS tax obligation. How do I find out what I owe after that has been applied? Help!!

I knew I owed some money, I think, from 2014, which is fine, I just need to know how much I still owe.

They should send a letter to you. Mine said the same thing. I owe some state income tax which is fine because I knew I wasn't getting my state but my federal refund 🤔 only thing I can think of is do u have any past due student loans? That could be a reason also. Make sure u call the BFS to get info

@Tgreen1013, the only way to know how much debt remains is to contact the company/agency that you owe the debt to. We would not have access to that information.

I have the same message. I have student loans,but those are being waived as of the 13 of March. I filed the 24th of March. What is going on? Is the system not updated or what?

@Jaylenno

You cant contact the IRS, and the Department of Education for more information.

Please contact the IRS Treasury Offset Department at 1800-304-3107.

OK. But is this just a formality? Has the IRS not updated it's system yet? Does it automatically get forwarded to the Treasury department and and then waived from there or what?

Can you clarify your questions please so we can assist you?

If you were due a refund, you can use this link for more ways to track your refund.

If you are trying to determine reasons as to why your refund is taking longer to be processed, see this link for more possible reasons why your refund is taking longer to process.

@user8ca8266d You posted your question to an old thread that has no activity since 2020.   No one at TurboTax knows if anything is wrong with your tax return or whether there is a problem.  TT does not get any information from the IRS after you file your return.   If you owe back taxes or delinquent child support, the IRS can seize your refund.  Do you have a reason to think that might have happened?   Do you owe money?   If the IRS takes your refund, they send you a letter about it.

You can use the IRS refund site to check on your refund.

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 35a of your 2023 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

 NOTE: You can contact the IRS Treasury Offset Program Call Center at 1-800-304-3107 to ask if they have an offset for you on file. TurboTax would not have that information.
