I had to amend my 2021 tax return. When I mail in the form 1040-v payment voucher with my check do I also have to send a copy of the amended return or just the voucher?

If you e-filed your amended return, then all you do is send in your payment with the 1040-V payment voucher with your check.

If your mailing in your amended return, you would include the check with the amended return.  You don't need the payment voucher.

An amended return can certainly be e-filed.   You can e-file your 2021 1040-X. For years prior to 2021, you'll need to print and mail your amended return.  The original answer was correct.

Can I e-file my 1040X to amend my return?

Also,

Can I file my Amended Return electronically? If you need to amend your 2019, 2020 and 2021 Forms 1040 or 1040-SR you can now file the Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return electronically using available tax software products.

@sammiejofelton If your amended return was transmitted & accepted, then your amended return went through.

You can track your amended return on the IRS website.

  • Processing it can take up to 16 weeks.

@cgoodwyn  If you already paid taxes owed, you don’t need to send in the payment voucher.

I amended by return through turbo tax and it was automatically sent electronically through their system and the IRS accepted the amended return. So does them accepting the return not count?

If I paid originally, do I still need to send in the voucher?

IGNORE the payment voucher if you are amending the return ...   if you have a balance due on the 1040X you send it with the 1040X ... no voucher is needed.

Look at the form 1040X …

Column A should have the figures from the original return, Column C the corrected figures and Column B the differences between the other 2 which needs an explanation on page 2 of the form 1040X.

If you completed it correctly you will see an entry on either line 16 OR 18:

On line 16 should be the amount you paid with your original return. If you paid nothing already then this line should be zero.

On line 18 should be the amount of your original refund you received.  If you have not received your refund yet then you need to wait for it.  If the refund changes from what you expected then this line must reflect that change.

Then you will see your extra refund on line 22 OR  the new balance due you need to pay on line 20.

Hi, I have a question to ask about this topic. I forgot to report 1099-B on 2021 tax return so I am doing the amended tax now to report it. My original tax return, I paid a check of $8100 ($8000 tax owe plus $100 penalty). The amended return shows amount owe is $10,000.  So, do I include a check of $2000, or a check of $1900 ($10,000 minus $8100 paid)?  I am sort of confused how to handle the payment I should be including. Thanks.

Yes, pay only the balance you owe on the amendment after subtracting your original payment of tax due.  You can try the following to enter the tax paid, it would seem the payment with your original return should come into the return, however you may be able to add it by using the steps below.

  1. Deductions and Credits > Estimates and Other Taxes Paid > Other Income Taxes Paid in 2021 > Income Taxes Paid
  2. Scroll to Other Income Taxes Paid in 2021 > Withholding not already entered on a W-2 or 1099 Revisit/Update

So in my example, I should include a check of  $2000 (do not count the penalty I paid), correct?

also very weird that Turbo tax is not pulling the right amount on Column A when I compared to my original return, but it seems the new 1040 form is calculating the tax correctly with the new income info I entered. Does that matter if Column A info is not matching what I have originally? Thanks.

Yes,  you would include the check of $2000 with your mailed 1040X.

However, the 1040X should only show what you owe in addition to what you already paid. Line 16 on the 1040X should show the amount you paid with your original return, and Line 20 should show the additional amount due.

You may need to go to FORMS and type in the $8100 you paid on Line 16, so that Line 20 correctly reflects the $2000 additional due.

Oh my Line 16 is empty. So I need to add this by accessing FORMS. But I think I should enter $8000 tax owe in Line 16 (not including the $100 penalty) when I followed the questions. Is that correct?

Also, when I hit the button for “Amended Return”, I noticed my original return in the software also updated to the amended version. Is that correct, or did I do something wrong?

Yes you are correct, in not including the penalty.

And yes, that is what it is supposed to do when you amend your return.  TurboTax will use that return to complete your amended tax return.

Thank you! I also noticed Line 18 has a number for “overpayment”. What is that ? I have tax owe that I paid in 2021 and no refund received at all so not sure how this is calculated. ? Can you explain? Thanks.

I am confused on Line 18 on 1040X. I didn’t have a refund on my original return when I first create the “Amended tax”, the tax monitoring indicator has negative ( -$443 ) under Federal and $0 under State. Is this error if the negative $443 showing? Or is it the penalty or interest adding automatically in Turbo tax based on the date I file 1040X? I know I owe more tax since my change is adding 1099-B capital gain. Thanks.

The refund indicator isn't as accurate with the amended return til you have completed the entire thing.  Go ahead and enter everything and then look at the forms carefully before you file.

Yes I did.

After I entered everything, Line 18 shows the $400 which this line is supposed to be “overpayment” if I have refund on the original return, right? but I don’t have any refund. My original return I had to pay tax of $8000 so I was wondering why there is even a number in Line 18. So I removed all my updates to see what I started with before I entered changes, and realized the indicator shows this “$440” in RED while the State show $0. Then since Line 18 shows $400, that makes Line 19 short of $400.  Line 19 is supposed to be the payment I had paid (including the check I cut $8000 in the original return).  I don’t know where this $400 coming from since I don’t have any refund in the original submission.

It would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2022" file that is experiencing this issue.

You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information.  If you would like to do this, here are the instructions:

In TurboTax Online, go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.

  1. Then select Tools below Tax Tools.
  2. A window will pop up which says Tools Center.
  3. On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.
  4. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is.  Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.

In TurboTax CD/Download versions, go to the black panel on the top of your screen and select Online.

  1. Scroll down to and select Send tax file to Agent.
  2. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is.  Click send through this screen and then you will get a Token number.

Reply to this thread with your Token number. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.

We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.

Hi, I had the amended return paperwork completed for 2021 adding a 1099-B capital gain I forgot to report. Do I need to send in the 1099-B form from the brokerage received? I entered each transaction separately so i don’t think I need to but just checking to be sure. Thanks!!

No for the 1099-B however you should get Form 8949 and Schedule D with the 1040X.

If mailing, include those forms.

If efiling, those forms will be included with the transmitted 1040X.

Yes great. Turbo tax in fact gave me all the forms including the 2 you mentioned. I am send all forms generated (even the forms didn’t have changes, like Schedule A). Am I doing this correctly? Thanks!

In your case, if you are mailing your Amended return, send in Form 1040X, Schedule D, and Form 8949, along with any payment due.

Do not include a copy of your original return with your Form 1040-X.  You include with Form 1040-X any form or schedule that has changed from the original form or schedule.  Form 1040-X is placed on top and the forms and schedules that you need to include are placed behind Form 1040-X.  The order is based on the number in the upper right hand corner of each form or schedule.

According to the IRS,

When filing an amended or corrected return:

  • Include copies of any forms and/or schedules that you're changing or didn't include with your original return.
  • To avoid delays, file Form 1040-X only after you've filed your original return. Generally, for a credit or refund, you must file Form 1040-X within 3 years after the date you timely filed your original return or within 2 years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.
  • Allow the IRS up to 16 weeks to process the amended return.
