Entering efile PIN to correct rejected federal tax filing

I received an email stating my filing was rejected because I entered the wrong PIN. I clicked on the link that was in my email. Once I logged in, I was unable to see anywhere to correct it.The website said my refunds were accepted.  I tried to message turbotax and I don't see a way to do that. Just links to a million suggested articles that arn't helping. Anyone have any ideas?

If your return was rejected due to e-file pin/AGI, please follow the instructions below on how to fix this:

If the 2018 adjusted gross income (AGI) or self-select PIN you entered for yourself and/or your spouse doesn't match the numbers in the IRS database, you'll get one or both of these rejections:

  • IND-031-04: The primary taxpayer's AGI or Self-select PIN from last year does not match IRS records
  • IND-032-04: The spouse's AGI or Self-select PIN from last year doesn't match IRS records

Even if you believe you entered the correct information, follow the solution below to make sure you didn't overlook anything.

  1. Sign in to your account and select the Fix my return button.
  2. On the Keep going to refile your return screen, select Revisit next to the reject code.
  3. On the following screen, you'll have the option to select how you want to proceed with the error.
    • You can select File by mail instead to print your return as-is and mail it to the IRS. You won’t have to deal with AGI issues and can skip the rest of these instructions.
  4. Or you can correct your AGI by entering the AGI from your originally-filed 2018 return (enter 0 if you didn't file last year) and select Continue e-filing to resubmit your return.
    • If you don't have a copy of last year's return, get your AGI from a free IRS transcript. On the transcript, look for the line ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME
    • Don't pull your AGI from your W-2. The same goes for 1099 forms.
    • Don't use the AGI from your amended 2018 return. Always get it from the first return you filed, even if that AGI was technically incorrect (for example, if you forgot a W-2).
    • See Special AGI Situations below for additional help.
  5. The next screen will ask you to confirm your AGI. If it's correct, select This is my 2018 AGI
  6. Follow the instructions to finish and refile your return. If your state got rejected along with your federal, we'll help you refile that too.

this reply does not address how to fix a bad pin.   I confirmed the AGI is correct.    This is the 2nd year in a row I have encountered this problem with TurboTax.    Tell me the process for fixing the PIN or I am going to use a different software and quit turbotaz

We need to first find out which pin you are having a issue with. Please see the TurboTax FAQ's below and reply back so that we may assist you further.

I am also disgusted with the fact I properly input my 2020 AGI, and the same e-file PIN I used last year, and a new one I also subsequently tried, but my Federal e-file keeps being rejected because of the "incorrect e-file PIN". The Federal e-file failure then causes my State e-file to fail!

To make matters worse, prior to attempting to e-file, I paid TurboTax $25 so I could e-file my state return.  I cannot because of the e-file PIN issue!

Now I must print BOTH Fed and State taxes and mail them by-hand, AND I am out $25!

Help me fix this frustrating situation Turbotax!

Have you tried entering a 0 (zero) for the 2020 AGI and e-file the tax returns again

Yes, I have tried this, and it did not work.

@ shewman6400

What is the rejection error code you received (preferably) or the exact message?

If your 2020 AGI is not working to verify your 2021 efile, did you happen to have unemployment income on your 2020 return and filed early last year before the late tax law (American Rescue Plan Act) about exclusion of 2020 unemployment income up to $10,200 went into effect for that year?   If so, I can tell you something to try.

"IND-181-01 - The Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) for the first taxpayer on your return is missing"

No, I did not have Unemployment Income.

I appreciate your effort to assist!

Oh, an IP PIN makes a huge difference.  That is NOT an "efile PIN."   That's not related at all to the efile verification steps using AGI or a 5-digit PIN.  It's even entered in a different section of TurboTax.

Once the IP PIN is correctly entered,  when you then go through the FILE section, you'll still have to verify with 2020 AGI in the filing steps.   If an efile fails due to a 2020 AGI, it will clearly say "AGI" in the error message and will have a different error code than the one you received.

An IP PIN (Identity Protection PIN) is a 6-digit PIN provided by the IRS to certain victims of ID theft, or to those folks who opt-in to the IP PIN program.   If the IRS has evaluated a filer as a victim of tax-related ID theft, they send a letter in late December/early January each year with one's new IP PIN to use for the particular calendar year.    Folks who have opted-in to the program have to retrieve their IP PIN from the IRS each year.

Did you receive your new IP PIN this year (to be used for filing any returns during calendar year 2022, such as the current 2021 return?)

If you need to retrieve your current IP PIN, here's how to get to the retrieval tool on the IRS site:

https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/retrieve-your-ip-pin

Are you using desktop software?   If so, once you have your current IP PIN, here's how to go to the IP PIN section to enter it in the desktop product:

  • Federal Taxes tab (or Personal tab in Home and Business)
  • Subtab:  Other Tax Situations
  • Scroll down to Other Return Info.
  • Choose topic Identity Protection PIN, then click Start (or Update.)

I used the same PIN as last year, verified this.  I also verified my AGI by getting a transcript AND I AM STILL being rejected to efile.   So frustrating!  I hate turbo tax.

TurboTax is not rejecting your e-filed federal tax return, the IRS is rejecting the return.

If you entered the correct 2021 AGI from your 2021 federal tax return, Form 1040 Line 11 and the IRS continues to reject the return, there is a good possibility that the IRS does not have your 2021 AGI in their database.

Enter a 0 (zero) for the 2021 AGI and e-file the 2022 tax return again.
