Do I need to mail both my original return and amended return? I amended my tax return before mailing the original.

I completed my tax filing on Turbotax and got to the point where I was told I "filed" my return. The return needed to be mailed to the IRS. I needed to change something and Turbotax required me to amend the return, which I've completed. I don't understand why I'm required to amend the return if I haven't mailed the original. Seems like I should be able to change my original since it hasn't been mailed and therefore hasn't been filed. Is there a workaround for this? If not, do I need to mail both the original and amended returns? Together or separately? Thank you.

Have you sent anything at all in?   Hopefully you have not.   Amending was not the appropriate way to correct a mistake on a return that had not even been filed.   You should not have clicked on amend.

I clicked on “amend” by mistake

When you can get out of the amend process, you need to go back to the original tax return and make the corrections in order to file it.   You "might" need to click on Add a State so it will let you back in to make changes---that does not really require you to add a state--it just lets you back in.

If it is already a total mess.....you might just need to start over.

Ok ... if you amended a return that was never filed AND you are going to mail in the return then you can use the return you have  just do NOT mail in the 1040X ... use the 1040 and all the other forms/schedules but do NOT mail in the 1040X form.

Thank you for the information.

Unfortunately, when I click Add State, I am directed to the amended return. The original return appears to be locked even though I have not mailed it and therefore it hasn't been filed.

Thank you. I do have both the original and amended returns and haven't mailed them. However, I do need to make a change to the original return. But Turbotax seems to have locked me out of making changes to the original return.

No, please select "Add a State" to get into the original return and make the corrections. THEN file that original return.

DO NOT file an amended return when the original has not been sent/accepted by the IRS and can be corrected.

If you clicked on the amend button to fix it you need to undo that first.  How to delete an Amended return in the Online version
