Costco Turbo Tax Deluxe

So i paid 29.99 at costco for my deluxe package, but at the end of my filing it is asking "how do you want to pay?" and it is saying there is an additional $39.99 refund processing fee. Did my code that I got from costco not go through? Haven't filed yet and was wondering how to connect my deluxe I bought from Costco.

Uh-oh...please clarify exactly what product you have been using.

Did you buy desktop software from Costco but used Online TurboTax by mistake or under the mistaken notion that they were interchangeable?   Did you not install and use the software you purchased?

If you used Online TurboTax (web version) instead, the Online version has no connection with the desktop software, so that's why it is charging you again.   And since you referred to a "39.99 for refund processing", that is an extra service fee if you choose to pay any TurboTax fees out of your Federal refund, such as fees for an Online return.

We can tell you what you will have to do, when you confirm exactly what you have done.

Everything has been inputed via the online software that I downloaded.

By "online software that I downloaded" I'll assume that means you downloaded and installed the TurboTax Deluxe program and have been using it correctly,  as opposed to logging into Online TurboTax version by mistake in a browser to prepare the return.

So if you are indeed using the desktop software installed on your computer, what exactly is it asking you to pay for?    In the desktop products, the only additional fees would be a 19.99 state efile fee IF one is efiling a state return, or the purchase of an optional add-on such as Audit Defense.

The state efile fee wouldn't make sense, since the Deluxe 29.99 from Costco is a Federal-only product.  It does not include a state program.     So did you happen to buy Audit Defense?

When it asks you "how do you want to pay?"  what is it telling you in your order that needs to be paid for?

I dont know. Ive paid for the costco software and an out of state refund pricing. I dont know why it is asking me to pay for anything else when I have just used the downloaded version of turbo.

The "review your order" screen should have shown what it is charging you for.  If you don't know "what" it wanted to charge you for, then do you know the price it wanted to charge you?  I'm referring to the product fees, not the optional "pay out of refund" service fee of 39.99.

You didn't happen to add a state return to your product, did you?  Are you only preparing a Federal return?

I'm going to attach 2 images below.  One is for desktop software, and one is for the online version.   Which of the images most closely resembles the product you have been using?   Click each image to enlarge.

The example is not the Deluxe Edition, but the general appearance should be the same in all editions.

Desktop image 2. When it got installed (after paying to get it from costco) it asked for a 39.99 payment right away.

Go through the screens in the FILE tab to get to the payment page.  Do you get a to a "review your order" page showing your product fees before the additional 39.99 service fee?

I don't know why it would have asked for a payment right after installing it.

Also please confirm that you are preparing only a Federal return and not a state return.  Or did you add a state return?

I added a state (SC) and had to pay that extra 39.99 which makes sense but not having to pay the costco one, south carolina, and other 39.99. Doesn't makes sense.

I don't fully understand what you meant there, since you only mentioned one state in that comment--South Carolina--but mentioned it twice.    Is South Carolina the only state for which you are preparing a return, or are you preparing returns for 2 different states?

Deluxe Edition comes in 2 versions--one that is Federal-only and one that is a combo Fed and State.  Which one did you buy?    Did you buy the Deluxe Federal-only version that does not have a state program at all and then bought a state program (South Carolina) for 39.99 to add to it?   If you paid 29.99 at Costco for Deluxe that suggests your Deluxe did not come with a state program, but obviously we can't see which one you bought.  It should say on the box and CD (if applicable) whether it includes state returns or not.   So if it is the version without one, the first state program would be 39.99.  (When needing a state program, it's cheaper to buy the Deluxe combo version which already includes the first state program.)

Or did you buy the Deluxe at Costco that is the combo version and has a state program included, and then bought a second state program for a different state?   If that's your situation, then it's the second state program that is 39.99.

In either case, if you pay that fee upfront with credit/debit card, there is no refund processing service fee.   If you chose to pay any fees out of your Federal refund, there is an additional 39.99 service fee .    You avoid that extra 39.99 refund service fee by paying upfront with credit/debit card.

Also, there is a 19.99 fee to efile a state return, except no fee for New York state, and no fee to print and mail the state return.

If you think you were charged incorrectly, you can discuss your fees with the folks at TurboTax Support by phone.    They can question you in realtime instead of this clumsy bulletin-board method and figure out exactly what you did and are experiencing.  If you were charged incorrectly, they can correct it.    While you have them on the phone, they can also help you get rid of the refund processing service if you prefer to pay upfront to avoid that 39.99 service fee.   Nothing account-specific can be handled in this user community forum.

You can get a phone number by using the form at the link below.  Where the form asks what product you are using, be sure in the dropdown menu to indicate "CD/download" and the proper operating system, then indicate which Edition.

In the question line of the form just say billing issue without quotes.

@gamoffats Can you elaborate on what it is you are experiencing? Did you purchase software from Costco or someone else that was supposed to include a state, but was forced to purchase that first state regardless?  Or are you experiencing something different.

I purchased through Costco, and I filed using the desktop version (not online), and it required a credit card when I went to file. I was charged for both the state return $19.99 (that was correct, as I needed to pay for that) and was charged an additional $39.99 for the “download,” even though I obviously was already using the Costco download of TurboTax that I had purchased. After an hour and 13 minutes in the phone last night, they finally refunded the addition charge of $39.99. There appears to be a problem within TurboTax, as I see I am not the only one who experienced this. I am thankful they resolved my issue, but it sure took a lot to do it!

And just to clarify the product you purchased from Costco did show a state download was included?

Having the same issue....bought the Deluxe version with state....just like I have done for 10 years. I get almost finished and it asked me how I want to pay the 39.99 fee for processing. So I paid 49.99 for the CD at Staples and now I need to pay another 39.99? Not to mention, I'm using a MacBook, and have lots of issues trying to even get the darn thing to open. If you close it and don't finish it, its gone....won't open.....very disappointed in Turbotax this year.

Are you sure it wasn't charging you 19.99 for the state efile fee and then did you choose to pay that state efile fee out of your Federal refund?

You said "39.99 for processing."   That makes me think you may have chosen to pay the 19.99 fee out of your Federal refund instead of paying it upfront with credit/debit card.

If you did choose that method to pay TurboTax fees out of the Federal refund, there is an additional 39.99 (or $40) service fee.  In California the additional fee is $44.99 (or $45.)

If that's your situation (i.e., chose to "pay out of refund"), the total fee at the time of efiling would be 19.99 plus 39.99 = 59.98 plus possible sales tax.

If that's what is happening to you, and if you haven't already paid, you can go through that payment section again and remove that payment method and pay upfront with credit/debit card.

Go back through the File tab slowly and watch the screens and be careful what you click on.  There is one screen that can trip you up.  I think people get going too fast at the end to file and don't pay attention to what they are clicking on to continue.

I am having the exact same problem. I never had an issue before.

I purchased turbotax deluxe at Costco. I put the disc into my computer and put in the code that came with my disc and filled in the information. Now it is saying that I did not purchase it.

If this can't be resolved soon. I will decide to use another program.

@Dasharadhi   Are you in California?  You get one free state PROGRAM download to prepare unlimited state returns.  Then each state return including the first one is 24.95 to efile.  If you want to have the 24.99 fee deducted from your federal refund there is an EXTRA 44.99 Pay with Refund Service charge in California.  39.99 in other states.  Or you can pay with a credit card to avoid the extra charge.

Already did through mail. You certainly didn't respond in a timely manner. I don't think I will be using Turbo Tax next year.
