AGI rejection

Married, I am self employed and wife is retired. Just filed jointly State & Federal returns. Both rejected saying AGI didn't match last years AGI. I verified the AGI is correct. When filing Turbo Tax asks to verify AGI for both husband & wife. Why, if we're filing jointly? I put the same AGI number in for both of us. Should I have put 0 in for my wife?

Try using 0 (zero) for both of your 2021 AGI's and e-file the 2022 tax return again.  If that is also rejected then enter the 0 for your wife and the actual 2021 AGI for yourself and try again.

Could it be because all previous years were mailed in?

It very well could be the reason.  A mailed 2021 tax return took the IRS months to process.  So if the return was not processed until late in 2022 or even in early 2023 the 2021 AGI would not be in the IRS database.

No.  The IRS does have the AGI record for all taxpayers.  If you continue to receive a rejected return you can always mail it.

You can try to e-file a return as many times as you want so you can try again.  The amount that should be present or entered for each of you (taxpayer and spouse) should be the amount on line 11, of your Form 1040 for 2021.

IND-031-04: The primary taxpayer's AGI or Self-select PIN from last year does not match IRS records.  This was the error code. I don't think the pin could be the problem since all previous years were mailed so there were no PIN's. When I submitted this years I just went with the PIN's Turbo Tax supplied.

If the 2021 adjusted gross income (AGI) you entered for yourself (or for your spouse if you filed jointly) doesn't match what the IRS has in their database, you'll get this rejection. Please see this Turbo Tax FAQ for assistance with your e-file reject.

Update!!! Ok, so I resubmitted the Federal after setting both AGI's to zero and just got confirmation Federal was accepted. Just resubmitted the State we'll see if that now also gets accepted. Thanks all for help/suggestions!
