What is State Fast Deposit?

State Fast Deposit gets your state tax refund into your bank account sooner than your state would normally send it. Here's how it works, what it costs, and what to do if something doesn't look right.

How does State Fast Deposit work?

Once your state approves your refund, we deposit your estimated refund into your bank account ahead of your state's payment date. When your state sends the actual refund later, we keep that amount to cover what we already paid you. You don't need to do anything.

We'll email you to confirm whether your refund arrived early.

How much earlier your money arrives depends on your state. Some states consistently send us refund info ahead of their payment date. Others rarely do. If we can't get your refund to you early, it arrives on your state's normal schedule and you aren't charged.

How much does State Fast Deposit cost, and when am I charged?

State Fast Deposit costs a flat $10. It's one price no matter how many days early your refund arrives.

You're only charged if your refund arrives at least 1 day early. If it arrives on your state's normal date, there's no fee.

  • On your state's normal payment date, you pay $0.

  • At least 1 day early, you pay $10.

We take the $10 out of your state refund. If you'd rather pay another way, you can choose to be charged directly instead.

If you're also using Federal Fast Deposit for your federal refund, that's a separate $35 fee. Your emailed receipt lists the two fees separately.

How do I know if my state is eligible?

State Fast Deposit is available in a growing number of states, and we're adding more throughout 2026. If it's available for your state and your refund qualifies, you'll see it offered when you choose how to get your refund. If you don't see the option, it isn't available for your situation this year.

Why can't I get State Fast Deposit?

You might not be eligible if:

  • State Fast Deposit isn't available in your state yet.

  • You're filing more than one state return with a refund (a second state refund makes both returns ineligible).

  • Your state refund is under $100 after all fees come out, including any Refund Transfer fees and the $10 State Fast Deposit fee.

  • Your state refund is over $20,000.

  • You chose File Now Pay Later, Refund Advance, a paper check, or split deposits for your federal refund or federal balance due (these federal choices make your state refund ineligible too).

  • You're filing an amended return or a prior-year return.

  • You're using a business product or TurboTax Expert Full Service.

  • You didn't agree to the required consents when you filed.

  • You used a foreign address or PO box, your forms weren't final, or you're under 18.

How do I find the State Fast Deposit fee on my receipt?

You won't see a printed receipt while you're filing, just a confirmation screen. After you file, we email you a receipt with your order details. Your state refund amount and the State Fast Deposit fee show up as separate lines, so you can see exactly what you paid.

If you used both State Fast Deposit and Federal Fast Deposit, you'll see both fees listed separately ($35 federal and $10 state), even if we presented them to you as one combined offer while you were filing.

How do I know whether my refund actually arrived early?

We'll email you after your refund is processed to let you know whether it arrived early. You can also check your bank account. If the deposit landed before your state's expected payment date, State Fast Deposit worked. And if it wasn't early, you weren't charged.

Why hasn't my state refund shown up in my bank account yet?

If we weren't able to deliver your refund early, it arrives on your state's normal timeline, and you aren't charged the $10 fee.

If we can't deposit your refund electronically at all, we'll mail you a check instead.

What happens if you can't deposit my refund into my bank account?

If we can't deliver your refund by direct deposit, we'll mail you a check for your full refund, minus any fees. We send the check to the address on your state tax return, so make sure that address is current.

We mail checks for refunds up to $7,500. If your refund is more than that, it goes back to your state tax agency and they'll send it to you directly.

What do I do if I can't cash or deposit my check?

Contact us and we'll help you sort it out. The right fix depends on why the check was refused, so it's best to talk it through with us before you try another bank or check-cashing location.

One thing you can try first: if your bank or a check-cashing location has questions about whether the check is real, they can verify it directly with Intuit by calling 1-800-780-9247. That often clears it up on the spot.

Is TurboTax holding my state refund?

We don't have access to your refund money before your state releases it, and your state sets the date it sends your money. Once your state approves your refund, we advance you the estimated amount ahead of that date and recover it when your state's payment arrives.

If your refund didn't arrive early, we never had early access to your money. Nothing is being held.

Why did my federal refund come early but not my state refund?

This happens when your federal refund qualified for Federal Fast Deposit but your state refund didn't qualify for State Fast Deposit. Your federal refund still arrives early as expected. Your state refund arrives on your state's standard timeline at no extra charge. Nothing went wrong with your return.

Why do both my refunds have to go to the same bank account?

If you're using direct deposit, Credit Karma Money, or Federal Fast Deposit for your federal refund and you also want State Fast Deposit, both refunds need to go to the same bank account.

You can send your state refund to a different account if you'd rather. You'd just get it by standard direct deposit instead of State Fast Deposit.

This rule doesn't apply if you owe money on your federal return instead of getting a refund. In that case, you can pick any account for your state refund.

Why did State Fast Deposit disappear after I added a second state return?

State Fast Deposit is only available if you have exactly one state refund. When you added a second state return with a refund, we removed the offer from both states automatically. You weren't charged anything.

If you remove the second state return, State Fast Deposit should become available again for your remaining state, with no leftover fee.

Can I get State Fast Deposit if I owe money on my federal return?

You don't need a federal refund to use State Fast Deposit. As long as your state refund qualifies and you didn't choose an excluded option for your federal balance due, like File Now Pay Later, you can add State Fast Deposit on its own. You'll see the offer on the screen where you choose how to get your state refund.

Do I get State Fast Deposit free if I use Credit Karma Money?

If your state refund goes to a Credit Karma Money account, we waive the $10 State Fast Deposit fee.

Why didn't I see a separate offer for my state refund?

What you saw depends on your state:

  • In some states, your federal and state refund options appear together on one screen, with a single combined offer covering both Federal Fast Deposit and State Fast Deposit.

  • In other states, the federal offer appears on its own screen first, and State Fast Deposit appears later, when you choose how to get your state refund.

  • If you don't have a federal refund, you'll only see State Fast Deposit, on the screen where you choose how to get your state refund.

If you don't remember being offered State Fast Deposit specifically, you may have seen it bundled with your federal offer at one combined price.

What do I do if I was charged but my refund wasn't early?

If you were charged the $10 fee but your refund didn't arrive early, or your order was canceled, contact us and we'll review it and refund the fee.
