What is Illinois e-file reject IL1040-8000-2 or IL1040-9900-2?

by TurboTax39 Updated about 18 hours ago

If you receive Illinois e-file reject IL1040-8000-2 or IL1040-9900-2, it means you need to review and correct your or the secondary taxpayer's signature requirements.

If the signature info you entered on your Illinois e-file agreement doesn't match what's on file with the Illinois Department of Revenue, your return will be rejected with one of these errors:

  • IL1040-8000-2: Review and correct your signature requirements. At least one of the following signature fields must be present and valid on the Dept. of Revenue's file: Primary Signature, IL Shared Secrets, IL PIN, Prior Year AGI, Driver's License, or State ID Number or Zip Code.
  • IL1040-9900-2: Review and correct the secondary taxpayer's signature requirements. At least one of the following signature fields must be present and valid on the Dept. of Revenue's file: Primary Signature, IL Shared Secrets, IL PIN, Prior Year AGI, Driver's License, or State ID Number or Zip Code.

To fix either of these, try the following recommendations.

  1. Open or continue your tax return.
  2. Select File and proceed to the Sign Your Illinois Return screen. Select I don't have my Illinois 2022 Adjusted Gross Income.
  3. Enter your signature information in only one of the signature option fields, leaving the others blank:
    • 2022 AGI from line 1 of your 2022 Form IL-1040 (not your federal AGI from your IRS 1040 form); or
    • 8-digit Illinois PIN, which you might be able look up at the Illinois Department of Revenue's website; or
    • Illinois driver's license number or state ID (info from other states won't work; must be from Illinois).
      • Note: If you didn't file an Illinois return in 2021 and 2022, this is the only signature option available to you. If you don't have an Illinois driver's license or state ID, you'll be filing a paper return this year.
    • If you are unable to supply any of these items, stop. You cannot e-file this year. Select Back until you get to where you can change your filing option to File by mail.
  4. Select Continue and follow the onscreen instructions to resubmit your return.

If your return gets rejected again with the same error, try a different signature option in step 3, or proceed to the following section, Other options.

If you've tried signing your Illinois return with the information you know is correct, and your return continues getting rejected, you'll need to file a paper return this year.

Illinois will continue rejecting your return because your data doesn't match what they have on file.

After mailing your return, we suggest you follow up with the Illinois Department of Revenue and request that they correct their records so you can e-file next year.
