How do I fix e-file reject R0000-504-02?

by TurboTax41 Updated 3 weeks ago

E-file rejection R0000-504-02 happens when a dependent's name or Social Security number doesn't match what's in the IRS database.

First, gather the Social Security cards for all of your dependents on your return. Once you have everyone’s cards, select your version of TurboTax below for instructions on how to fix and refile your return. Be sure to enter the last name(s) and number(s) exactly how they appear on the card(s).

  1. Sign in to TurboTax Online and select Fix my return.
  2. On the Let's fix your returns and then refile screen, select Fix it now or Revisit.
  3. On the Verify dependent's social security number screen, compare your dependent's name and Social Security number to their Social Security card.
    • If the social security number is incorrect, select Yes, there is a mistake, Continue, and correct their name or Social Security number on the next screen.
    • If the social security number is correct, select No, I have verified the information and there is no mistake, and Continue.
  1. Open TurboTax and at the Rejected message, select Help Me Fix It.
  2. Compare your dependent's name and Social Security number to the number on their Social Security card. Both names and numbers should match exactly.
    • If they don’t match, follow the onscreen instructions to correct the name or Social Security number and refile.
    • If the Social Security number is correct, follow the onscreen instructions to print and mail a paper return.

To fix this rejection, you'll need to leave the TurboTax app and sign in to TurboTax Online from a browser.

Social Security number tips

  • Mixing up the Social Security number is a common error, so check your entry digit by digit.
  • If your dependent recently changed their name or number, use the old one listed on their actual Social Security card.
  • If their last name is hyphenated, enter the entire name in the field, including the hyphen.
  • If they have multiple last names, enter only the last one. For example, Melissa Gomez Fernandez should be entered as Melissa Fernandez.
  • It gets a little tricky with a middle name as well. If you have multiple last names and a middle name, use only the first last name listed on your card. For example, Melissa Juana Gomez Fernandez should be entered as Melissa Gomez.

The IRS database might be incorrect. If you confirmed that the name(s) and Social Security number(s) are correct, and your return is still being rejected, it could be that the info in the IRS database is incorrect.

In this case, you’ll need to print and mail your return.

  1. Sign in to TurboTax and select Fix my return.
  2. On the Verify dependent’s Social Security number screen, answer No, and we’ll guide you through printing and mailing your return.

Tip: To prevent this rejection next year, call the Social Security Administration (SSA) at 1-800-772-1213 to verify their records.
