To view your prior year AGI (you must use the same account used last year - username and password)

  1. Sign In to your prior year TTO account (if your using a different account from last year, your AGI will not transfer)
  2.  Go to the prior year section of  My Tax Timeline,
  3. Click View adjusted gross income (AGI).

OR

You can obtain a copy of last year's tax transcript online using IRS link:  https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

You can elect to file a paper return also.

was rejected because of the AGI - It was verified but still getting rejected.  my husband passed away last January.  Does that make a difference?

Yes, the fact your husband passed away can make a difference.  When you enter your  husband's 2018 AGI it will be the same as yours if you filed Married filing jointly in 2018.

I checked my AGI from last years taxes and it is the same.  My husband did our taxes but I lost him at the end of the year and I am trying to file them and I have double checked everything and the AGI is what it was last year.  What is wrong?

I did all of those things.  Is there a problem with the turbo tax program that I do not know about.

My return keeps getting rejected as it states the AGI for my husband from last year does not match.  I double checked it and it does match.  My husband passed in August.  Is this why it keeps getting rejected?

When you receive this error, it means that the number is not matching the database on the IRS end, even though it may match your records.

Sometimes this can be overcome by using the number -0- and sometimes it happens for reasons we cannot explain, which causes the return to be required to be mailed in.

You can also get this rejection if you have tried too many times (generally 5) with the wrong AGI.

This is an on going problem, I ran into this issue last year and could never resolve it. I know I was using the correct AGI, but could never electronically file my return kept getting an error. I ran out of time last year so I ended up mailing in my return. I do not want to mail it since I getting a large refund this year and the IRS is taking forever to process and mail refunds.

Here I am again this year and getting the same error, This time I went to the IRS website looked up the 2020 AGI and it is the same number turbotax is automatically inputting. I file jointly and for whatever the reason turbotax is entering the same  AGI for both my wife and I even though the help on this subject said the spouse should be 0. I have trying filling with my wife AGI at 0 and the correct AGI for me and switch them both and had them both set the same correct AGI and it fail now 3 times. The above person is correct I do not want to try again and get locked out if it fails 5 times. I know our pin is correct been using the same pin for 15 yrs now since I first began using turbotax to file our taxes electronically.

Is there any way to reset this and make the IRS think this is the first time filing a return. Need better advise other than not sure why it works some times and does not work other times.

There is no way to trick the system into resetting the number of submissions.  However, for try number 4 what works many times is "zero" for both yours and your spouse's prior year AGI.

DMark,

Thanks I will try that and see what happens.

Non of the help I read made it obvious that entering 0 for both my spouse and I was a fix. Also turbotax asked if you are filing jointly or separately, I select jointly, and you would think Turbotax would know to enter zero for my spouse verse double entering the AIG since all the help said that the AGI is only entered for one person not both.

Your tax return may get rejected if last year’s is still pending. Here’s how to fix the problem.

If you’re one of the millions of Americans still waiting on your 2020 tax return, you’ll need to take a special step to avoid a rejection for this year’s electronic filing, according to the IRS.

When filing digitally, you validate your return with the previous year’s adjusted gross income. Typically, your tax filing software has these details if you’re a returning customer. Otherwise, you can manually enter the numbers.

However, the validation process changes with a pending 2020 return.  If last year’s return is still in limbo, you’ll need to enter $0 for your 2020 AGIwhen filing online.  That way you can file electronically, and you don’t have to file a paper return.  This applies to only digital filers.

(If this does not work, you may also need to uncheck the box that you filed last year?)

With millions of people in this boat, Turbotax should have put that in their updates.

UPDATE:  After having my tax return be reject 2x, I put 0 in for AGI and it was accepted.

Even if you believe you entered the correct information, follow the solution below to make sure you didn't overlook anything.

Sign in to your account and select the Fix my return button.
On the Let's fix your returns and then refile screen, select Fix it now or Continue without fixing.
On the following screen, you'll have the option to select how you want to proceed with the error.
You can select File by mail instead to print your return as-is and mail it to the IRS. You won’t have to deal with AGI issues and can skip the rest of these instructions.

Or you can correct your AGI by entering the AGI from your originally-filed 2019 return (enter 0 if you didn't file last year) and select Continue e-filing to resubmit your return.
If you don't have a copy of last year's return, get your AGI from a free IRS transcript. On the transcript, look for the line ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME.
Don't pull your AGI from your W-2. The same goes for 1099 forms.
Don't use the AGI from your amended 2019 return. Always get it from the first return you filed, even if that AGI was technically incorrect (for example, if you forgot a W-2).
See Special AGI Situations below for additional help.
The next screen will ask you to confirm your AGI. If it's correct, select This is my 2019 AGI.

Follow the instructions to finish and refile your return. If your state got rejected along with your federal, we'll help you refile that too.

You also have the option of entering her prior-year AGI or her prior-year PIN in order to e-file.

Try entering zero. It worked for me - and it's one of the suggestions from the IRS. (Go here and search for "adjusted" and you'll see it: https://www.irs.gov/about-irs/the-2022-tax-season-has-started-tips-to-help-you-file-an-accurate-return).

TurboTax told me my AGI was X. My printed return said it was X. The transcript from the IRS that TurboTax recommended getting said my AGI was X. I tried repeatedly and kept getting rejected. But apparently the IRS still hasn't finished processing all the returns from 2020 (even though they cashed my check long ago). So as far as they're concerned, I don't have an AGI for 2020.

I changed my AGI to $0, resubmitted and got the notification that my return had been accepted less than a half-hour later. Good luck!

Please try to enter 0 for your AGI.  For more details on this, please see the Help Article here.

"With millions of people in this boat, Turbotax should have put that in their updates..."

I totally agree. This is the second year in the row for me where I have still the previous year return pending (not yet processed by IRS) and I have to go through the same process to put Prior AGI = 0 for both persons in our joint tax filing.). Not quite easy to do with TurboTax...

This process was clearly highlighted by the National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins in 2022 as reported by CNBC https://www.cnbc.com/2022/02/14/your-tax-return-may-get-rejected-if-last-years-filing-is-pending.html.

How come Turbo Tax has NOT integrated this change in the electronic filing step of their application to ask if prior taxpayer return is still pending and put automatically Prior AGI= 0 in this case? Both TurboTax application and experts comments on their website are quite UNHELPFULL on that topic!
