Why does my federal taxes owed amount jump up drastically whenever I choose to start my State?

Twice now I've gone through my federal taxes.  Each time it shows a verified federal refund of $1400, but when I switch to state filing it suddenly and inexplicably jumps up from a refund to instead owing nearly $7000.  Nothing changes except they ask me to review questions about my vehicle use for rideshare driving.  It asks me twice to verify my vehicle and put in the information in review, even though they're already questions I've answered when putting in my income through the program.  It's after I answer/confirm the questions that my federal tax amount jumps up to such a drastically high number.  I've already cleared my entire return, started over from scratch, and got the same issue at the same point.  What's going on??
