Why am I not able to efile my NYS tax return? Turbo tax said I need to file by mail, but my return is no different than it has been in the past?

I am using the Self Employed turbo tax edition.  I was able to file my federal return.

What error are you getting on your NY return?

It is telling me that I need to check the review tab as there is a form that needs to be mailed.  There is nothing under the review tab, and it states the return is ready to e-file. When I go to while, it states I have to mail the return. I have never had to mail a return.

We are unable to see your return. Can you provide more detail? Does it give you a specific form number? Some states allow you to e-file but still require that specific forms be mailed directly.

DavidD66 previously responded to a similar question.

Sometimes e-file just won't work, and you have to print and mail your tax returns.

Although New York generally requires you to e-file, there is an exception if the software does not allow for e-file.

How do I print and mail my return in TurboTax Online

If you are NOT including a payment, mail your return to:

Can someone please verify this is true? Turbo tax provided paperwork with steps for mailing; steps include a letter stating NYS law requires e-filing. Very confusing. Any suggestions or help?

It is possible that you are not able to e-file due to having Form IT-2Summary of Wages, on your state return. This form is unsupported by TurboTax.

Per NYS, you're required to electronically file your return if you meet all three of the following conditions:

  • You use software to prepare your own personal income tax return
  • Your software supports the electronic filing of your return
  • You have broadband Internet access.

Since TurboTax does not support one of the forms required, you are not required to e-file.

It seems NY has a Enhanced form this year. 2020 Enhanced Form IT-2, Summary of W-2 Statements

I am ready to switch to another tax preparation company. I am unable to e-file my New York return. The error says I have a certain tax situation but does not elaborate and gives no help. I waited an hour for a callback and then was disconnected.

May I ask does the error message say any more than just "you have a certain tax situation?"  Could you post the exact error message you are receiving here?

Me too!  This is so frustrating.  It needs to be fixed.  Nothing I have done has worked and talking to an "expert" didn't either.  The only way they could help me, she said, was to upgrade for $140... This issue is bigger than one person.  I have very easy taxes and have had no trouble with turbotax or efiling in the past.

@superbon17:  May I get some additional details?  Are you getting a specific error related to pension exclusion?  Please post here for further assistance.
