The IRS will review the returns to reconcile the stimulus payments. They may adjust the tax return appropriately before sending your refund.

  1. Until the tax return has been accepted at the IRS you should wait to see if the return has been accepted which may not be until on or after the e-file start date which is February 12th.
    • If you find the IRS did give you the correct refund amount by either reducing or increasing your refund for the stimulus payment that should not have been added, there is nothing else to do.
    • If you find the tax refund is the same and the stimulus payment has not been included, you can amend your tax return.
  2. Check the IRS Get My Payment website for the actual stimulus payments you received before filing your return over the next week for the correct amounts.
  3. Follow the instructions at this link to amend your return if necessary: How do I amend my return?
