W2 wages earned in Indiana and noted on federal income tax form not transferring correctly to Indiana state tax form? Fed W2 wages are correctly entered.

Can you clarify if Indiana is your full-year resident state and if you are filing any other state tax returns?  Thanks.  @flymetothemoon00

We are full year residents of Illinois...  However some wages were earned in Indiana.  So we will be completing Illinois and Indiana returns.  Turbo Tax indicated we should start with the non-resident state first which would be Indiana.  And to clarify further the total W2 Wages shown on the transfer from the Federal form is incorrect.

To clarify. for Indiana, it is transferring an amount different from Box 16 of the W2?

Correct... The amount transferred in Turbo Tax is not the amount in box 16 from the wages noted on the Indiana employer W2 form.  It is not even the total W2 wages for all employers.

I assume that you are filing an Illinois Resident tax return and an Indiana non-resident tax return.

Within the Indiana non-resident tax return, what amount was entered at the screen Your Indiana wages?

The question on the screen says "How much of the $xx did you earn while working in Indiana?"

Review this screen and the subsequent income screens to see whether incorrect amounts were entered.

Total wages from W2 on the screen shows $2,477.  This does not match any of my W2 inputs from the federal form.  The income earned in Indiana is greater than this number.  So when Turbo Tax asks what amount of this figure was earned in Indiana what should I be responding?

Enter the correct amount of wages you earned while working in Indiana.   Also, review your W-2 entries, especially for boxes 15-20, make sure there are no typos between IL and IN, and check decimal points on all amounts.   If there is a misplaced decimal point in box 1 or box 16 on any one of your W-2s, it could cause that issue, so check them all.

I went ahead and entered the Indiana W2 taxable wages in the Turbotax screen form.  Then went through the entire work flow.  However it appears Turbotax has doubled the Indiana taxable income in it totals from what I entered from box 16.  I have not paid Turbo tax so I can not check what they actually are entering on the tax forms.  This in turn is messing up my Illinois return figures as it also shows this double income from Indiana.  Any ideas on how I can check what is really going on or how to correct this situation?

You can preview the tax summaries for each state return and preview the federal Form 1040 and Schedules 1, 2, and 3 if applicable.   I know you said you went through the 'entire flow', but was that nonresident state flow or did you go back through the federal also?   Use the directions in the link below to check your 1040 to see if the total wages are correct there.  If there is an issue with the federal portion, it is going to flow to both of your state returns.   Try deleting the W-2s from the federal and reentering them.  Or, since you haven't paid yet, it may be beneficial to clear and start over completely.   I believe you already stated you know to prepare the nonresident return first.   Or, if the federal numbers look okay on Form 1040, you can try just deleting the nonresident return and starting the state interview again.   And I assume you already reviewed the actual W-2 form(s) you received and verified they are correct and not in need of correction by your employer(s)...

How do I preview my 1040 and tax summary in TurboTax Online?

I deleted the Indiana W2 and reentered it.  Getting the same results.  Also I can not view the Federal or Indiana state tax forms under Tools as you suggested.  Looks like I need to pay before I can the tax forms to validate what is entered in either the Federal or Indiana tax returns.  Becoming very frustrating...

If this is in the TurboTax Online version, when state returns have had changes, sometimes it is best to delete them and get a fresh import from the completed Federal Return.

  1. First, please check My Info in the Federal return and be sure the box is checked for Made money in another state
  2. Then go to the States section and click on the delete icon for both Illinois and Indiana
  3. Then, add Illinois first,  and be sure it is a Non-Resident state and complete it
  4. Next, add Indiana and be sure it is a Resident State

This should prompt the allotment of income in both Illinois and Indiana, and allow you to enter the taxes paid in Illinois into the Indiana return.
