TurboTax says I cannot file because form 8889-T will not be available until 1/27/17. The form is currently on the IRS website. Why can't I file today?

The fact that it's available on a web site doesn't really have anything to do with any tax software program.  Once the form is finalized by the IRS, it has to be coded into whatever language the software uses and has to be thoroughly tested for calculations and e-filing acceptability, and then the IRS has to approve it for e-file.  It always takes a little longer for a form to become available for e-file in a software program.

I was told that my 889-T would be available on 1/26 and I signed up for the email once it was ready. How long does it usually take from the date that I was it was going to be available to it actually being available on TurboTax?

It's only 3 more days.  The IRS just opened the floodgates yesterday for e-files of all the returns that have been waiting until 1/23.  It's unlikely they'll work through the backlog for several days.  If you have an Earned Income credit or Additional Child Tax credit, the IRS will just be holding all those returns until 2/15.

I have the same issue, however I don't understand why Turbo Tax has already forced me to pay for my return (with my credit card) instead of taking the money out of my return like I usually do. Why did I have to pay already; I would have preferred to pay with my return.

You cannot have your fees taken from your Federal refund until the Federal return in final, because your final Federal refund is unknown until it's final.  If you can, though, it's always best to pay up front and avoid the extra $35 bank charge to have your fees deducted from the refund.  Even with a high-interest rate card, you should be able to pay off the card with your refund when you receive it, and have the card interest end up costing you less than the bank fee.

Hi Anita,

I had an HSA in 2015 and thought it had carried over to 2016. Turns out my account was still open, but no contributions were made. Is there anyway to get the 8889-T removed from my account so I can file? I am unable to remove it via the website. I've already paid the fee to register, so unfortunately I am unable to clear and start over.

Thank you for your help.

delendaaa-you may still have a carryover of some sort from the prior year or you may have a code W in Box 12 or 14 of your W-2 and, if no amount shows, you'd have to delete the code.  Check your paper W-2 and the one in the program at Federal Taxes, Wages and Income, W-2s, Update and Edit the one in question.

You can try and delete the form here, but if anything is carrying over, it'll reappear:
