TurboTax 2023 bug with Form 8615 Schedule D Worksheet lines 44-47

Form 8615 Schedule D is not completing line 44, and as a result line 45 is blank where as, on my return, it should be $0. The form is then calculating line 47 to be the lesser of $126 vs [blank], selecting $126 instead of what should be $0. As a result, TurboTax is computing a $126 tax owed on my child's return when there should not be any. Please fix this before April 15.

Mine is showing a zero instead of a blank.  Follow these steps:

Desktop version:

  1. Delete the form
  2. Save your return while closing the program.
  3. Update the program
  4. Open
  5. Enter the information again.

Online version:

A full or corrupted cache can cause problems in TurboTax, so sometimes you need to clear your cache (that is, remove these temporary files).

For stuck information follow these steps:

  1. Delete the form/ worksheet- if possible, see How to Delete
  2. Log out of your return and try one or more of the following:
    • Don't use Internet Explorer.
    • Clear cache and cookies,
    • Sign in using a different browser.
    • Sign in using a different device.
  3. Log back into your return.
    • Enter the information again.

I deleted the form, updated (software said "Your software is up to date"), then re-entered the data, once directly into the form and once through the step-by-step, both resulted in the same blank 44 & 45 fields.

Amy, your line 46 is blank!  Is that a completed return?

Intuit sent an email reporting they have fixed the problem. After updating, fields 44 and 45 are still showing blank but the amount of tax now calculates correct. Good enough for me. Hopefully good enough for the IRS 🙂

Sweet! Got the same email. I haven't tried resubmitting yet after getting rejected the first time but will probably try tomorrow.

OMG! I efiled my taxes and they were accepted. Then I get this email:

Dear TurboTax customer,
Thank you for being patient while we investigate your issue.
We’re still working on a solution and we’ll send you an email once a fix is in place.
Thank you for being a TurboTax customer.
Sincerely,

TurboTax

Yesterday TurboTax said this problem is fixed, and they deleted the thread.  Unfortunately the problem persists after the software update.

In case it helps the TurboTax development team, the problem is easy to reproduce.  Below is an example with screenshots of the Form 8615 worksheets.. with incorrect on the left and correct on the right.  The difference is a $1 with one field.

This is mine after yesterday's update. So it does appear to be right for me. Before the update, it had 179 in line 47.

FYI, I followed Amy C's instructions for the Desktop (Mac) Turbotax.. namely, delete form 8615, update Turbotax (none needed) and restart the program.   Got the same result as shown in an earlier post, eg:  With parents taxable income at $5000 and parent's schedule D line 15 at $5022.. the net tax is $603.   Reduce the schedule D line 15 a dollar, to $5021, and the tax goes to $1.

Gary, I noticed your line 15 shows $89,250. Line 15 of the worksheet is supposed to be the child's filing status. If the child is married filing jointly, I believe they are not subject to the 8615 kiddie tax.

Thank you for giving it a look.  His taxes are filed separately, cause he made more in unearned income than the cutoff to be included in my taxes.

I ran the number in Turbotax Online, and could reproduce the problem there.   Simplified the data, and came up with a cutoff at $2500 of unearned income.  If it's above this (eg $2501), the fed tax due is $1068 (see screenshot).   Otherwise fed tax is $0

Walking through Form 8615, and checking the logic.. it appears that Turbotax is erroring on Line 44:  "Figure the tax on the amount on line 21".    If Line 21 is zero, TurboTax does not put a zero in Line 44.   Below is a screenshot

Gary,
That was the same error I was getting before the most recent update. Try to update the program, close TurboTax, then reopen it. You might go as far as shutting off the computer and turning it back on, and then running TurboTax to be sure the program closed before reopening it.

Praise the Gods, thank you Rolan.   I looked for a software update (none needed), deleted the 8615 form, its worksheet, and restarted the computer.  After adding in the data, and waiting a while by going between Form Mode and Easy Step.. the correct numbers started showing up.

Unfortunately, this problem reappeared once TurboTax did the final review, and need to added filing status on 8615.   I tried the same approach (delete form, restart).. and also tried with a fresh return.   At this point, I'll wait until TurboTax issues a software update.   Thank you for the help.

I am still running into this problem and am still waiting on a TT fix. However, I think I can explain why some people see this as fixed and others see it as not fixed. There are 2 pages to the Form 8615 Schedule D Worksheet - the first for the child and the second for the family. It appears the problem is fixed on the Child's page/page 1 (Child's Line 15 Schedule D Tax Calculation), but it is NOT fixed on the Family page/page 2 (Family's Aggregate Line 9 Schedule D Tax Calculation).

On the latest TT (desktop), I tested this theory it works as I describe. If you get Line 21 to be 0, causing Line 44 to be blank, the Child's calculation (page 1) on Line 47 is correct. Do the same thing on the Parent's calculation (page 2) and Line 47 is wrong, as described in the original post.

Hopefully we'll see a fix from TT for this soon. Please? In the meantime, you can override Line 44, forcing it to be 0 (rather than blank) on the Parent's calculation, but I'd rather not have to do this for my final return.

Thanks for the info! Explains why mine is correct. I've already filed but still keeping an eye on this just to make sure.

Thanks for this reply. It makes sense with what I'm (still) seeing. The parent sheet is not working correctly to fill in a zero for line 44. I overrode it and that might have to be the way it goes. Not sure it will file correctly. Does Intuit monitor these forums? Wondering if this is still being fixed or they think it IS fixed.

I still haven’t filed, but it’s appearing to let me file. At the check when all done it points out this override and will repeatedly do that if you keep re-running Smart Check, but if you just choose Done instead, you move forward in the process.

I’m certain TT knows the issue still exists and I at least I will get a confirmation once it’s fixed (I got a notice they were still working on it a few weeks back, so if they fixed it, I’m sure the same process would update me). Since they have a work-around, and likely affects few people, I suspect it’s low priority.

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess I'll hold on another week and try to electronic file. If it rejects, I guess I'll file paper. This is pretty bad, though. Let me know if you hear anything. Thanks.

I haven't heard anything new from the devs about fixing this, but I did confirm today that I CANNOT file electronically due to the override I've made on Line 44. That's a cherry on top of the annoyance sundae that TT has provided me this year.

Thanks to the override option, at least we can complete the tax forms.  I've printed mine, and mailing now.  Next will be trying to get a refund for a $25 to e-file to California (paid before I hit the same e-file denial)
