Why would you mail your 2024 tax return to the IRS if it was not completed?

Because according to turbo tax there was nothing g left to do. Asked if I wanted direct deposit or mail, I didnt see the file for direct deposit so printed them and mailed. Also. I paid the 28. Dollars  I owed for federal and the IRS cashed the check, yet the deducted the amount from my state refund. So I stead of me getting 276. It's now 248.

Look again at both your federal Form 1040 and at your state return to see the amount for federal tax due on line 37 or for the amount of your state refund on your state form.  We do not know what state you are in so we cannot tell you what line to look at.  It will be down near the bottom of the state form.

Federal and state tax returns are processed by completely different entities.   Your state refund cannot be used to pay federal tax due, nor can a federal refund be used to pay state tax due.

The IRS does not have anything to do with your state refund, so your state refund was not reduced by the IRS for federal tax you owed.   If your state reduced your refund, they will send you a letter explaining why your refund was changed.

Yes I understand that, then why was amount reduced by the same amount owed? When I prepared them and what made me believe they were done is because turbo tax said they were done and took me to the page to pay for the service and I did I then down loaded my taxes and printed them then mailed. Every time I go to the "where's my refund" and put the info in it say t doesn't have any info that matches what I entered. So if they weren't complete, why did turbo tax ask for payment.

@Felicia-e-turner-66   Where are you seeing it was reduced?  At the end Turbo Tax just shows you the net federal and state combined. But that is only for your info. You will still get the full refund and you need to pay a tax due.

When did you mail the returns?   Why didn’t you efile them?   It takes them longer to process mailed returns.  The Where’s my Refund lookup is only for a federal refund.  So you can’t find any info there on your return since you had a federal tax due.  You need to check the New Jersey website.

What was the $28 you paid?   Was that your fee for using the software?  Not an amount owed to the IRS?    If you were supposed to get a federal refund it would be shown on line 35a of your federal Form 1040, and that amount is the amount you have to use on the IRS refund site.   But if you owed federal tax due, nothing would show up on the IRS refund site.  If you were getting both a small federal refund and a state refund, then the TurboTax summary just shows the combined amounts.  Again---you need to look at your actual tax returns to see what they say.

I guess you dont remember me saying g I paid and the IRS cashed the check. The refund amount was 276. Now it's showing 248, that's where I'm seeing it reduced. When I checked the IRS It's not showing g anything. As far as the e filing i never saw where to set that up..I guess I need to speak to someone at the IRS

That’s what I said.  You paid the federal IRS tax due $28?   Then you can’t look up your return at Where’s my refund.  That’s only if you have a federal REFUND.

Then you have a state refund of $276?   You should still get the 276 from your state refund.  Check for a state refund  https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/refund-status/help/how-do-i-track-my-state-refund/00/25571

Make sure you are using the refund amount from your actual state tax return and not the combined amount Turbo Tax showed you at the end.  That was for federal and state combined.
