TURBO TAX 2024 FILES NOT TRANSFERRING FROM 2023

TURBO TAX 2024 FILES NOT TRANSFERRING FROM 2023

I do tax returns for free for friends.

I got 2 files to transfer from 2023, but the rest will not transfer from 2023 to 2024.

I get a message that the "file is being read", but after that the file does not open up.

When I start the program, there is a message to RESTART THE COMPUTER, but, as I have done that many times, the files still will not transfer.

This needs a solution.

When you choose 'Transfer' if the file does not transfer automatically, click on 'Choose File'.

A window opens where you can find the .tax2023 file on the computer, then click 'Open' at the bottom of the window.

Here's more info on Transferring a Prior Year Return.

When using the Browse feature and selecting my *.tax2023 file, the Open option is greyed out.  If I select the backup *.pdf file, the Open option is highlighted.  I do not want to use the PDF backup but the real *.tax2023 file.

I had a similar problem. It would import, but it would corrupt the data in the *.tax2023 file.

This worked for me:

Install TurboTax 2023.

Open the 2023 program and let it update. Apparently there were some last-minute bug fixes.

Open the *.tax2023 files in TT2023 and compare the numbers to the saved pdf version or your 2023 W-2s.

Check to make sure the numbers are correct. If the refund/payment amount matches exactly, your data is probably OK. Edit if needed.

Save the *.tax2023 file and close the 2023 program.

Open TT 2024.

Start a new return instead of using an old one. The old 2024 may be corrupted.

Try to import *.tax2023 again.

Note: importing 2023 data is a one-way street. Once it is in 2024 it can't be changed.

I have used TT for over 20 years; Premier TT.  I am not a novice with your product.  There is no error box to help with the debug problem.  What I think is wrong?  I think there is a field/table size change from 2023 that causes the transfer...

I have checked the minimum requirements to use TT and have even added another 8 MB (although I met the requirements.)  I have called tech support twice.  First said you working on this transfer problem after connecting a higher level.  Second tech even told me he couldn't help because I could not connect physical to an Ethernet cable.  I tried to explain a desktop does not an physical port to do this.  Ethernet connection is internal to the box like Wi-Fi.  He hung up on me.  Please hep me.

Most users are able to transfer their 2023 returns to 2024 successfully.  Have you tried the steps outlined by @fiedler above?

Some users report that turning off all anti-virus software (including modem) worked.  Others that have a new computer from last year have opened a new Windows account, and run TurboTax from there successfully.

Is your 2023 file on your C drive?  If on an online drive, this can impact transfer.  If this applies, you could temporarily move it to your C drive for the transfer.
