Transfer of files from 2023 to 2024

When I transferred my 2023 turbo tax file to my new 2024 return, it did not transfer one of my rental businesses, (schedule E), including my depreciation for the past 25 years.  BIG PROBLEM!!!!!! I think there is a glitch in the program.  I uninstalled and reinstalled and no change.  Need Help!!!!

I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file for 2023 and 2024, a diagnostic file is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:

TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign into your online account.
  2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
  3. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
  4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
  5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
  6. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent” *
  3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created.  Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
  4. Please provide the Token Number (including the dash) that was generated in the response.

*(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, “Send Tax File to Agent”)

@VickiC

Could you have transferred from the wrong file? See if you have another .tax2023 file on your computer. Or maybe last year you marked the Schedule C or E as FINAL in Turbo Tax? Or the Asset as Sold?

Here's an idea. Do you still have 2023 installed? Try opening 2023 program and see if you can get your 2023 return to show up in it. Go to FILE - OPEN. And see if the right info is in it and if it's marked as final.

Then save it again with a name and place you can find. Go to File - Save As. Then start a new 2024 return and transfer from the saved 2023 file.

No.  I have been very careful and have done this multiple times with the same results.

Hello,  Since I have not heard from you, I thought I would reach out to see if you were able to find a solution with the account information I sent you.  Please respond and let me know.  I have been holding up on continuing with my 24 taxes hoping you could find a solution.  Waiting to see what you have discovered so that I can get started!  Thanks, VickiC

Did you get the 23 and 24 files I sent to you on Monday?

I can confirm receipt of the files.  I am working through the transfer, when I review the 2023 there is only one property listed as property A.  The depreciation has transferred over from the 2023 schedule to the 2024 as it should.  From your concerns, there should be more than one property listed on the Schedule E.  However, when I review the 2023 return there is only Property A.  Can you clarify the 2023 return file you filed had additional properties listed on Schedule E?  If this is the case there is an issue occurring with the 2023 file as the file I reviewed only has one property listed which is why it is transferring over as one property.  Do you still have 2023 TurboTax downloaded on your computer?  If you can access the 2023 software start with the recommendation VolvoGirl provided above and open the 2023 software, verify that all properties are listed and save to a different location on your computer outside of TurboTax.  Be sure to import the file from the new location.   Please respond back and make sure to include @BrittanyS at the end of the post so it sends me a notification.

Thanks for your response.   On my 2023 return there is 3 properties listed, A, B, and C on Schedule E,  P. 1.  I saved as to my desktop and opened 24 again and transferred  that file from the desktop.  Still, it only transferred my rental property B and my oil royalties C.

It appears that whatever is blocking the transfer to my 2024 file is also blocking the transfer to You?

Sounds like they are missing in your 2023 tax file.  After you filed 2023 did you go back into your return and change anything?  I would try opening your 2023 return in the 2023 program and see if it's right.  And search all over your computer for any other 2023 files ending in .tax2023.  Do you have any other backups?  Do you use One-Drive or something?

Actually they are not missing in my 23 files.  I made some changes after my initial print and file but all three schedule E files were there and still showing up in my 2023 file that I transferred to you to view, but did not show up in your received file.

BrittanyS      Did you receive my 2 responses last night?  Wasn't sure if I sent them correctly to reach you.  Could I have a corrupted file and if so, can it be fixed?  I don't want to  hand enter all my depreciation this year only to find out that it won't transfer next year as well!!!!  VickiC  to  @BrittanyS

I had the same problem as @VickiC.  None of my business rental properties or royalties transferred from the 2023 TTax file.  I finally was able to transfer these over using the approach of @VolvoGirl.  I transferred my 2023 file to another computer, opened it in TTax2023 and verified that it had all the properties. After saving this file I then transferred it back to my original desktop in a folder different from the original one.  When I imported from there into the 2024 TurboTax these properties did transfer over successfully.  Thanks to VolvoGirl for the suggestion!  (I am using the Home & Business version in both years.)  Although this worked, it shouldn't have been necessary.  I haven't had this problem before in the last 4 years, so something is clearly different this year.  Here's hoping the TurboTax development team looks into this.
