The zip file of document download won't open on my Mac. Any suggestions?

When I try to retrieve last year's tax documents. A zip file appears in my downloads box. I double click to open and it fails: "Unable to expand "Turbotax - My Docs 2023-2024_(etc.) (Error 1 - Operation not permitted)

If you are trying to transfer last year's return into the 2023 TurboTax software for Mac, see this help article.

To transfer info from your 2022 TurboTax for Mac return:

  1. Open TurboTax for Mac 2023 and choose File New Tax Return.
  2. Select Begin and choose Use a tax return that's on my computer.
  3. Select your 2022 return from the list and select Continue.
  4. Select Continue to review the transferred information.

If you are having a different issue with opening a zip file:

From a Mac user guide:

Unzip (expand) a compressed item: Double-click the .zip file.

The unzipped item appears in the same folder as the .zip file. If you want to, you can delete the .zip file.

Note: If you can’t open the .zip file, make sure you have enough space on your Mac for the unzipped item.

Alternatively, you can right-click on the zipped folder.

  1. Select Open to unzip your file if Archive Utility is set as your default.
  2. If it's not, right-click and click Open With, and choose Archive Utility.
  3. Click appropriate icons to access the extracted files.

The Archive Utility is a small app built into the macOS operating system. It is used to perform compression (archiving) and expansion of files in the background without opening the window of the utility itself.

Or, the error message you are seeing may be from the Archive Utility. See this Apple Community discussion thread for suggestions on how to address this.
