Terrible! Downloaded TTax '20 Deluxe. "Micrsoft Defender Smartscreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting." I ran it anyway. Then got "Failed to extract archive"?

Why is TurboTax 2020 Deluxe installer not recognized by MS Defender and why does file extraction fail?

Shutting off your internet security long enough to download the installation file is not uncommon. So do that  unless you know how to let your fire wall accept the information.

If you are downloading from TT directly and not a third party site :

How do I turn off Windows Defender SmartScreen?
How to disable Windows Defender SmartScreen
  1. Launch Windows Defender Security Center from your Start menu, desktop, or taskbar.
  2. Click the App and browser control button on the left side of the window.
  3. Click Off in the Check apps and files section.
  4. Click Off in the SmartScreen for Microsoft Edge section.

Or try using a different browser if EDGE is being a pain.

I turned off smart screen, disabled defender, disabled all the Norton antivirus/firewall. Still get "failed to extract". Called TurboTax help who gave me these steps. VERY poor install. If Intuit doesn't fix the issue in 3 weeks, I'm asking for a refund.

@Anonymous - by chance do you have a new computer? seeking users who have Windows 20H2 loaded.

I have a brand new laptop.  I installed ESET and use that as my antivirus, firewall defense system so Windows Defender Smartscreen is disable.  However, after downloading the turbotax zip file, when I try to unzip and install the application, I get a big red message from Windows Defender Smartscreen saying "Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk."  My only option is to clip the box saying "Don't Run".  How do I get around this problem?

This is an ESET issue  so lower the security levels or  turn it off  while you install the program.

I did that and it still did not allow me to unzip.  Got the same stupid Windows Defender Smartscreen box with the same stupid message.

This is not a program issue ... you have an OS/antivirus situation to fix ...  disconnect from the web and disable both systems you have installed.

and then when you get through all that, there is a risk Turbo Tax will freeze when you get to the activation screen (it's another Microsoft issue)... simply change the resolution (start>setting>system>display) to 800x600 , relaunch Turbo Tax, activate and then change the resolution back to its original setting.

I don't think you ever download Turbo Tax as a ZIP file.  The download is a regular .exe file.  Turn off all your anti-virus programs and download it again.  You may have to download it using a different browser.
