Should I list my W2 gross income or my taxable amount in line 1a on my 1040?

I take the standard deduction. I do not itemize.

When you enter the W-2 you received from your employer in the TurboTax program.  The gross amount of wages reported in box 1 of the W-2 is automatically entered on the Form 1040 Line 1a.

You also receive the Standard Deduction automatically unless the total of your itemized deductions are greater than the Standard Deduction for your filing status.

Standard deductions for 2023

Single - $13,850 add $1,850 if age 65 or older
Married Filing Separately - $13,850 add $1,500 if age 65 or older
Married Filing Jointly - $27,700 add $1,500 for each spouse age 65 or older
Head of Household - $20,800 add $1,850 if age 65 or older

Enter the W2 exactly as shown.  The Standard Deduction is automatically subtracted down on 1040 line 11.

Did you enter your W2 into the program?
