rejection code IND 031-04

my return has been rejected 7 times now with rejection code IND 031-04 saying spouse pin or AGI are incorrect. They are NOT! I confirmed AGI with IRS. Spent 1.5 hrs with TT. Really frustrated. Any similar?

Have you tried entering a 0 (zero) for the 2020 AGI and e-filing again?

the software does not allow me to do that. Someone at TT  had me try that as well.

The IRS said I should use  EITHER the pin OR the AGI, but the software does not allow that either.

Are you using one of the TurboTax online editions?  If so, see this TurboTax support FAQ for correcting an AGI - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/agi/help/where-do-i-correct-my-agi-in-turbotax-online/00/26311

Or if you are using one of the TurboTax desktop CD/Download editions see this TurboTax support FAQ for correcting an AGI - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/agi/help/where-do-i-go-to-correct-my-agi-in-the-turbotax-cd-download-software/00/26312

All any of those links do is tell me to correct my AGI. It IS correct!! I don't need to know how to find where to do it.  The rejection codes are WRONG! There is absolutely 100% nothing wrong with AGI or PIN

If the IRS is rejecting your e-filed 2021 tax return because of the 2020 AGI, even if correct, and you have tried using a 0 for the 2020 AGI and that is also being rejected, then your only option is to print and mail the tax return.

I've definitely considered that. I don't want to wait 6 weeks to learn it's been rejected again #9! My only other option, it seems, is to pay someone, which I feel I've already done, since I paid for the software. But I'm def at a chokepoint. I just spent another 47 minutes with a TT person. Bless her heart, she was really hoping for a solution! But zip. I believe it's an IRS issue. I'll try to fix THAT! lol. Wish me luck.

If you mail the tax return then the 2020 AGI is a moot point since it is not needed on a mailed tax return.  The IRS only requires the prior year AGI entered when electronically filing the return.

Excellent point! Thank you!

Same exact thing happening to me.  Extraordinarily frustrating.

@chasgabriel

If it was rejected for AGI—-be aware that many 2020 returns took so long for the IRS to process that your 2020 AGI might not be in the IRS system.   Try using zero instead.

If filing with zero is rejected then file again but select the option that you did not file last year.  The IRS does not see that question and it will allow you to e-file with no AGI question.

If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.

Thanks @xmasbaby0!   Setting the AGI to 0 worked for me.   Much appreciated.

Please first try the suggestion of inputting zero and let us know if it resolves your issue @richardmazzarella.

This is really horrible advice. "just print the tax return and mail it in."  This same error code occurred to me and I have both a tax return and a transcript.  I know the AGI is correct. Why use turbo tax at all if you can't e-file. Isn't that the point of purchasing the software?  Really horrible support.

After 6 failed attempts with correct information, I tried zero'ing out the AGI fields for both myself and spouse (joint filers), and that worked!

Hi there, I am experiencing this same issue. I am trying to enter 0 for my AGI as well as my spouse's AGI. But I don't see where I can do it for my spouse. It only prompts me to enter AGI for me. We are married filed jointly.

You mentioned you zeroed out the AGI fields for both you and your spouse - how did you do that? Thanks so much for your help.

Hi,

I am unsure what you are seeing but, if you always file jointly, wouldn't there only be the one AGI?  I would assume that and submit.   Best of luck

If you filed  2020 jointly and you are filing 2021 jointly then you only need to enter the single zero for the AGI.

Yes we did file 2020 jointly and are filing 2021 jointly, and I tried entering the single zero for the AGI and it got rejected. I contacted the IRS and received confirmation that 0 is the correct AGI. Looking through posts it seems that others have encountered this issue and it was only resolved when they were able to enter 0 for both spouses AGI. I just can’t get the Turbo Tax wizard to prompt me to enter it for both…..

I don’t remember where the AGI entries are requested for both joint filers. I probably went to “forms view” and manually made the entries.  Because I successfully e-filed already, TurboTax won’t let me back into that part of the process, so I am unable to re-create the steps.

If you already e-filed successfully why are you trying to recreate the steps to enter your AGI?  What are you trying to accomplish?
