rejected efile for AGI

My 2022 return has been rejected for AGI. My 2021 tax return is still in backlog. I tried using zero as per advisement. Please advise.

You are stuck and must file via mail.

I am not sure what you mean by backlog. If you never did 2021 taxes until far too late, the IRS may have never processed your 2021 taxes, hence you have no AGI yet (at least not on-line).

Hence, print and mail your taxes.

Next year, you should be OK - hopefully.

Its a "catch 22"... until the IRS finally processes your previous year's taxes, there is nothing on-line at the IRS that TurboTax (or anyone) can pull to check.

Please see the below TurboTax help article for a list of potential reasons that returns get rejected due to the AGI and suggested solutions.

What if I entered the correct AGI and I'm still getting an e-file reject?

For additional information, please see How do I fix e-file reject IND-031-04 or IND-032-04?

My 2021 and 2022 e-file returns have been rejected by the IRS even though the AGI and the PIN were correct. For both the returns, I was getting a refund. So, I think IRS is rejecting the returns with a refund so that they can delay the refund payment. My son's 2021 return was also rejected because he had a refund but my daughter's 2021 and 2022 returns were accepted because she owed taxes.

Please see the TurboTax FAQ posted in the thread directly above yours, regarding potential reasons why returns get rejected even when the AGI is correct.

I’m having same issue.  IRS advises today I should be able to efile using 5 digit PIN.

Where do I enter that into TurboTaxi stead of AGI??

i have similar situtation, my identity was stolen and had to file paper return last year.

My last year return is still not processed so the AGI does not match when i try to efile.

If i will paper return, it will again take one year and i will be in a never ending loop.

If they have not processed the return and you want to e-file, enter zero as the AGI. @yatish sharma

Tried putting 0 and it was still rejected.

Tried putting 1 also and it was still rejected.

Then you will have to print, sign, date and mail your tax return.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for how to print and mail a tax return using the TurboTax online editions - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/printers-printing/print-mail-return-turbotax-online/L5bwuqXGy_US_en_US?uid=lgnowgb3

I was repeatedly rejected for last year's AGI.  IRS help line looked up my 2021 return and said, "Your 2021 is not in our system until about 2 weeks after your refund check is mailed.  Thus ... there's nothing for the IRS pre-check computer to find to compare to and so I  WAS REJECTED.

The IRS help agent said to enter $0.00 dollars in the last AGI field.  That's $0.00 dollars not just $0 dollars.  I did that exactly and in my case my return was accepted.  Good luck.

Turbotax made it 0 even afte entering 0.00.

Is their any method to make the complete 0.00 show in the filing.

@yatish sharma do not enter 0.00, you need to just enter a 0 (Zero)

Please read comment by mk2022mk

I had tried 0 already and it was rejected.

MK confirms that you need to enter 0.00 per IRS help guideline.

But Turbotax makes 0.00 as 0 as soon as you enter the number.

Want to know from mk2022mk   or anyone else how to make it 0.00

@yatish sharma I did read mk2022mk answer and if you already tried the 0, then the IRS is not accepting the amount.  TurboTax will not accept the 0.00.  If you cannot get your AGI, you will have to mail in your return.  I have been doing this for over 22 years and never has that worked.

You might want to read the following:

" I have been doing this for over 22 years and never has that worked.  "

Never is a pretty strong statement.

So what you are saying is that in the '22 years," you have been using this workaround it has never worked.

This AGI request is a recent IRS security measure, not something you've dealt with for 22 years.

TurboTax rounds everything on the screen to the nearest dollar but since you don't actually know the format is used in submitting the raw data to the IRS, and it does not appear on your return, you don't know if $0.00 was sent to the IRS ... unless you tried it both ways as I did.

It does not take long to try it and the IRS responded with a Rejected or Accepted email in just a couple of hours.

@mk2022mk  Are you just trying to start something.  I been helping on this forum for 22 years, I never said I used the work around.  The answers in this post also say to use a zero. 0.00 does not work and I would not give someone the wrong information.  Not to mention I was answering someone else not you.

TurboTax will not accept 0.00.

Thank you for the responses.

I wanted to know if you used turbotax, how did you enter 0.00

turbotax removes the digits after the 0 the moment you enter them.

I have tried 0 twice now and it was rejected both the times.

I will really appreciate if i can know how to enter 0.00 and see if it gets accepted.

Right now its a loop for paper filing. i filed my paper taxes in 2022 April and they are yet to be processed.

So now i will have same issue every year.

@yatish sharma   I am telling you, TurboTax will not accept the 0.00, only a Zero.  If you want to believe someone that is telling you wrong, then there is nothing I can say that will help.  If your original AGI and a Zero do not work, then you will need to mail in your return.  If you filed an amended return in 2021, do not use the AGI from your amended return, use the AGI from your original return.

Can I put a 0 for my AGI in TurboTax?

If you filed your 2021 return after the filing deadline and it wasn't received and processed by the IRS by Dec. 9, 2022, you should enter “0” for the AGI amount.

I hear you bluedeb and know that paper filing might be the only option but was hoping somehow electronic works out.

I am tired of waiting for the paper return to be processed. I didnt amend the return last year, i filed the original before the deadline and it is yet to be processed. Moreover, when i call them and wait for 3 hours - the response i get is it is getting processed but we cant give you any other information.

@yatish sharma   I wish I could give you the magic answer but if your 2021 return has not been processed yet, then Zero should have gotten you to e-file your 2022 return.  Not sure why you have to keep mailing in your return but any chance your were a victim of identity theft?  If you are, then you need to get an IP PIN from the IRS to e-file.

@yatish sharma Is your IP Pin for this tax season, 2022?  Each year you need a new IP PIN.  Also, the IP PIN goes in a different section of your return, it does not go where you enter your AGI.

How do I add or remove my 6-digit IP PIN?

Follow these instructions to enter your IP PIN or to remove one that you accidentally entered.

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account
  2. Open or continue to your return if you don't already have it open
  3. In the search bar type IP pin (don't forget the space)
  4. Select the Jump to link in the search results
  5. On the Identity Protection PIN screen, answer Yes. Select Add and enter your IP PIN in the space provided
    • If you need to remove the IP PIN, select the trash icon
  6. Select Continue, then select Done
