Reject Code IND-031-04

After receiving 4 rejections, I learned some valuable information. Currently, the IRS still has not processed 7 million 2019 tax returns. If this applies to you, even though your 1040 has a specific AGI, the IRS has it as zero.

To confirm this most likely applies to me, I created an IRS account to see my tax transcripts. For the year 2019, instead of the transcript, it has a "Verification of non-filing letter for the year" which "provides proof that the IRS has no record of a filed Form 1040-series tax return for the year you requested."

I went back to my 2020 return and entered zero for the AGI and re-efiled. The IRS accepted it within 5 minutes.

This more than likely explains why I only received the first stimulus and not the second or third.

I of course will contact the IRS to further confirm for my scenario, but I thought this might help some people.

Well now isn't that special!  This happening to my mom as well and she also never received the second stimulus payment.  I think I will try this.  Thanks

AGI = zero works for some filers but not for others.

you can also first tell TurboTax you did not file last year.

Looking at what the IRS had was the most helpful. I'd recommend creating an account to view her transcripts.

Thank you so much! After 3 attempts rejected for my minor kids' tax return the 4th attempt was accepted. Big relief!

In the File section of the program on Step 3 you are asked if you filed a 2019 tax return.

I checked the IRS database and the AGI was correct and the amount that TurboTax had filled in. After the 3rd reject, I changed the AGI to 0. It rejected with the same code for Spouse AGI. I changed that to 0. And the return was accepted. I think there is a bug on one side or the other - TurboTax or the IRS.

Thanks for sharing this. I did the same thing and after wasting half a day getting rejected, it FINALLY worked!
