need help

Hi,

I get my W2 in just fine and it shows that I get a refund. But I have a 1099-R from were my dad passed away in Dec 2018 he left me as his beneficary of his union pensions for 7 months. I had them take out taxes every month. When I go to add that in to Turbo tax my refund turns around into saying that I owed almost 600 and it asks me RMD and other things. Shouldn't it be pretty much straight forward? Plus should I be getting penalized that bad from what my dad left me? I started with a $466 refund. then went to $593 in the hole. I don't make that much money to begin with.

I suggest that you view your tax summary before and after you enter the 1099R.

Depending on the amount of the pension, maybe there just wasn't enough taxes taken out to cover the additional tax on the income.

Your Tax Summary will show your total income, total Taxable income, taxes assessed, payments (how much was withheld and/or payments you made) your refund or amount due.

To get to the Tax Summary:

1.  With your TurboTax Return Open

2.  Click on Tax Tools from the menu on the left (in Black)

3.  Tools

4. Tax Summary

If you see any row items that don't seem to match up to your actual documents, go back through those sections entirely and answer all prompts and questions.

This should help you see how much in additional TAXES are being added by the additional income.

The best way to accomplish this task is to create a TurboTax account by starting his return in TurboTax.  Once in the return all the help functions will be available.  Here is the page to get started.  Click on "Products and Pricing" at the top of the page and select "TurboTax You Can Do It" to start the process.

We cannot see your return in this forum. When you run the final review, click Review next to any errors. TurboTax will be you to the section of your return that requires reviewing or fixing. If you continue to need assistance, you may contact TurboTax Support.
