My wife lives outside of the U.S., and I am filing separately. She does not have an SSN, but the system is requiring one and won’t let me proceed to the next step.

Just enter 999-88-9999 and when you print the return for mailing erase that SS number and write in NRA for nonresident alien.

According to this TurboTax support FAQ it is possible to e-file this tax return - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-credits-deductions/file-taxes-spouse-nonresident-alien/L4AuRKrMd_US_en_US?uid=m7jhv066

@bery , agreeing with the responses  from my colleague @DoninGA , I am just wondering

(a) what are you trying to achieve --  do you want to file as MFS for the foreseeable future  or  is it that only this  year you have had no choice ?

(b) Is your tax home USA or are you also abroad and  you both live together  ?

(c) Does she have  income in the country where she lives currently ?

(d)  Which country is she in ?

I ask these questions because   depending on your longer term plans , you can indeed file MFJ  ( of course  this would mean  some more paperwork and file by mail )   And depending on your plan  and the country where she is , you can also exclude her foreign income from US taxes.

If you are  interested in these other options, then you have tell us more  ( start by answering my questions ( either here  in this thread or by PM ( just  no PII -- Personally Identifiable Information ).

Is there more one of us can do for you ?
