My return was rejected because my child’s ssn

How do I fix this? It says someone else has filed with one of my dependents socials but my finace(mother of my children) has not even filed her taxes yet and I know this for 100% fact. How do I find out which of my dependents socials was already claimed or has the error for? (I have 4 dependents on my return)

This reject error message can happen if:

  • there is a transposed digit in your return
  • the number is wrong at the Social Security Administration
  • another person deliberately tries to claim them
  • another accidentally enters this social security number for their own child
  • someone has filed a fraudulent return including this number.

To find which of your dependents is causing the error, please look at your full Reject Code. The last two digits of the Reject Code show which dependent caused the flag, based on the order they are listed in your Form 1040

For example, Reject Code:

  • R0000-507-01 - The First Dependent listed on your Tax Return was already Claimed as a Dependent
  • R0000-507-02 - The Second Dependent listed on your Tax Return was already Claimed as a Dependent
  • R0000-507-03 - The Third Dependent listed on your Tax Return was already Claimed as a Dependent

If the number is accurate in your return, then you will not be able to e-file your return with that dependent entered. Even if it is accurate, it will need to be checked on a paper return. Depending on the difference it makes in the return and if you have a refund or owe taxes, you may:

  • Leave the return the way it is and select to print and file by mail. There are significant delays with this method this year due to a carryover of returns not processed yet from last year.
  • Delete the dependent from your return and e-file the rest of the information, then after the return is processed, if there are no adjustments from the IRS, you can amend your return and add the dependent, along with any credits which they qualify on the return. This will need to be filed by mail and thus will be delayed but it will not delay the rest of the return.

If you decide to amend, this TurboTax Help article has step-by-step directions to amend your return. Amend 2021 return

If you look at the error message it will state-dependent number (X).  It will be the dependent listed in the (X) slot from the top.

I don’t see that. Is there any way someone could call me or email me and pull it up and show/tell me?

Could you send me a private message and tell me what it says because it doesn't show me the full reject code or say anything of what you mentioned. The only information I can find about it is in the email turbo tax sent me and it just has the first part of the reject code, not the full thing

If you want someone to show you on your return, you will need customer service on the phone lines. You will need to be at your computer when you talk to them so you can work together on your return. Please contact Us

I’ve tried the chat and I’ve tried calling and requested a call back twice and both times, they call me and the line is silent the whole time. No one says anything. I’ve stayed on the line 30+ minutes each time and no one says anything. Also, I already got the CTC advance last year so I’m not sure why I’m getting this error message. Is there anyone can tell me their number and ext to call to get some help?

You can always mail your tax return if you know the information for each of your dependents is correct.  I would suggest that you check the following for each dependent.

  1. Last name as it appears on the social security card exactly.  If there are two last names you must use the first last name, then the second last name.
  2. Check the number against the actual social security card.
  3. Check the date of birth of each dependent

These three criteria is being matched in the IRS system and the social security system would have the same information.  If they are all correct, you will have to mail your tax return. Even if there is an error on someone else's return the same number and name will not be accepted through the IRS e-file system.  I'm not going to say the system is never wrong, but It is very rare that their systems are wrong on this particular issue.

I’ve quadruple checked everything and it’s all right. Could I still do what the previous representative said and delete one and see if it’s accepted and then amend it later to get that portion back?

Yes, you can actually delete one, then try, add back and delete another then try, and so on.  It's not recommended to file after three rejects, but it's not limited.
