My husband I are in CA, trying to file separately. In Tax Withholding - Subtraction Adjustment section, I get "maximum value is 0" error for Federal and State Amount. Why?

California is Community Property state and you will need to file a Form 8958 with your federal return to allocate community property.

Thank you. I understand the general rules.

I think it's an issue with Turbotax application giving this error without much explanation. I should be able to enter an positive value to the subtraction adjustment box. Maybe it is expecting a minus value as it's a subtraction box. It's still unclear.

It's asking for a subtraction adjustment, so the amount needs to be entered as a negative number. So, it must be less than -0-.

I suspect the wording was tested and it was determined that this was the best terminology to be used. But I can see where the user could be confused!

Is that a confirmed official answer from Turbotax?

It's odd. Because, in the Community Property Income Subtraction Adjustment field, you can only enter a positive value.

Isn't it possible that there is a bug in the Tax Withholding - Subtraction Adjustment section?

Thanks

I had the same exact questions.  Did you figure out the answer?  Do we enter a positive number in the Community Property Subtraction Adjustment and then a negative number in the Community Tax Withholding section OR was this infact an error in TurboTax?

Thank you so much!
