My Federal Tax Return is accepted, but Illinois Personal Tax return is rejected because of ILHEADER-8500-7 - FormIL1040. I changed my legal name this year. What do I do?

If your Illinois personal tax return was rejected due to ILHEADER-8500-7, it means the Social Security Number (SSN) and the first four characters of your last name don't match the records from prior year returns.

Since you changed your legal name this year, here are some steps you can take.

  1. Check with SSA and IRS: Social Security number your name change is updated with the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the IRS. You can update your name with the SSA here and with the IRS here.
  2. Verify with Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR): Make sure the Illinois Department of Revenue has your correct name. You can  find the contact information for the IDOR here.
  3. Re-file Electronically: Once all records are updated, try re-filing your return electronically.
  4. File by Mail: If the issue persists, file a paper return. Attach a copy of your Social Security card and the court documentation showing your name change. You can find the mailing addresses here.

I already received my return from the federal. How do I only file my Illinois tax in the mail on TurboTax desktop?
