My E-fling with rejected because of "IND-181-01 - The Identity Protection PIN on your return is missing". I returned to my file and couldn't find where/how to change.

Do you have your IP PIN? If so, you can enter it into TurboTax into the following area:

1.) Federal

2.) Other Tax Situations

3.) Click See All Uncommon Tax Situations

4.) Scroll down to Other Return Info

5.) Click Start next to Identity Protection Pin

If you don't have your IP PIN, you can retrieve it from the IRS website below:

@Keoshla  You need either your 2018 AGI from line 7 of your 2018 tax return or your IRS PIN.

IDENTITY PIN

Per the  IRS:

Taxpayers who previously have been issued an Identity Protection PIN but lost it, must use the Get an IP PIN tool to retrieve their numbers. Taxpayers who have an IP PIN need to provide it when they file their return or if they are using the Non-Filer tool to enter their Economic Impact Payment information. You were asked for your 2018 AGI so that you can e-file 2019.  The 2018 AGI is how the IRS verifies your identity--they match up the SSN and the 2018 AGI with the person trying to e-file a 2019 return.

Your 2018 tax return shows your 2018 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) If you filed a joint return then the AGI is the same for each of you.

Form 1040        line 7

If you are using the same TT account that you used last year, you should also be able to find this number in your Tax Home for 2018

If entering the amount from your 2018 tax return does not work, then try entering “0” instead.  If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.

You can get a free transcript of your past return from the IRS:

https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

Note: If you filed late or amended your return, your correct 2018 AGI may not be in the system.

Note:  If you mail your federal return, you will also need to mail your state return.  You will not be able to e-file your state return.

Here is how to input your identify protection pin

Federal

Other Tax Situations

  1. Go through the screens until you come to the question: Did you experience identity theft and receive an Identity Protection Pin (IP PIN) from the IRS?
  2. Select Yes, I did and continue through the screens to input your pin and answer the question for identify theft affidavit.
  3. If you see a screen that says you have a W-2c coming, just ignore that screen. Continue through all screen until another Review and File again.

An Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is a six-digit number that prevents someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security number. The IP PIN is known only to you and the IRS and helps us verify your identity when you file your electronic or paper tax return.
