Issue with Tax Form 8915-F (Rejected by IRS)

The TurboTax online software is incorrectly filling out form 8915-F and as a result my return is being rejected by the IRS. If a user only takes a COVID Relief Retirement plan distribution and no other disaster and pays that off over 3 years, filling out form 8915-F is required. When reviewing my tax form I see the error, it is selecting the check box for Option D, but in that option the IRS form stays not to list Coronovirus in Option C. The software is automatically filling out Coronovirus in Option C, causing the IRS to reject the return due to it being filled out incorrectly. Please see the image in the link below and you'll see how the online software is filling it out wrong.

Try the steps listed in the link below to clear the errors, this seems to work for most people.  

 

 FIRST delete the 8915 E for BOTH you and your spouse (if married).  If you do not delete both of them it will not work. 

 

After deleting BOTH 8915-E, you should see that 8915-F is gone too. Double check to be sure the forms are both gone. 

 

After you see both forms are gone, walk back through and follow the steps listed here and below.  But, the biggest thing is deleting BOTH forms and walk through ALL of the questions for the distribution for ALL of the years back to 2018. 

 

Please try these steps to fix the rejection issue AFTER making sure the 8915 is deleted:  Also, if you are using TurboTax Online, after the forms are deleted, clear your cache and cookies to be sure it is completely gone. 

 

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account 
  2. Click on the "Search" on the top and type “1099-R”  
  3. Click on “Jump to 1099-R” 
  4. If you do not have a 2022 1099-R answer "No" to "Did you get a 1099-R in 2022?" (If you have any other 1099-R then enter all 1099-R and after entering your last 1099-R click "Continue" on the “Review your 1099-R info​​​​​​​” screen)
  5. Answer "Yes" to the "Have you ever taken a disaster distribution before 2022?" screen
  6. Answer "Yes" to "Did you take a 2020 Qualified Disaster Distribution?"
  7. Uncheck the box next to "If this was a Coronavirus-related distribution reported in 2020 check here" and click continue
  8. On the "Which disaster affected you in 2020?" screen I selected the blank entry and click "back" 
  9. Then recheck the box next to "If this was a Coronavirus-related distribution reported in 2020 check here" and continue.

 

Another option is to delete "Form 8915-F" and "Qualified 2020 Disaster Retirement Distr" and then go back to the retirement section and reenter the information:

 

  1. Open or continue your return in TurboTax.
  2. In the left menu, select "Tax Tools" and then "Tools".
  3. In the pop-up window Tool Center, select "Delete a form".
  4. Select "Delete" next to "Form 8915-F" and "Qualified 2020 Disaster Retirement Distr" and follow the instructions.
  5. Click on the "Search" on the top and type “1099-R”  
  6. Click on “Jump to 1099-R” 
  7. If you do not have any 2022 1099-R answer "No" to "Did you get a 1099-R in 2022?" (If you have any other 1099-R then enter all 1099-R and after entering your last 1099-R click "Continue" on the “Review your 1099-R info​​​​​​​” screen)
  8. Answer "Yes" to the "Have you ever taken a disaster distribution before 2022?" screen
  9. Answer "Yes" to "Did you take a 2020 Qualified Disaster Distribution?"
  10. Check the box next to "If this was a Coronavirus-related distribution reported in 2020 check here" and enter your information. (DO NOT Check the box if it was NOT a Covid related distribution)

Where is the option to delete 8915-F? I don't see it anywhere in the online software. I tried going into the Form 1099-R and tried to answer no to disaster based income and it doesn't remove 8915-F.

Here is how to delete a form 8915-F.  

 

Open or continue your return in TurboTax. 

 

In the left menu, select "Tax Tools" and then "Tools".

 

In the pop-up window Tool Center, select "Delete a form". 

 

Select "Delete" next to "Form 8915-F" and "Qualified 2020 Disaster Retirement Distr" 

 

Then follow the instructions.

Thank you so much.  I have not been able to file at all. 

 

I'm using the web version and have tried 2 different browsers and updated both.  

I've also cleared my tax data and started all over. 

 

I keep getting this message:

 

 

I tried looking at files to delete as you suggest here, but neither 8915-F or Qualified Dist are there: 

 

 
 

 

any other suggestions for me please?

Go back to the 1099-R entries for your IRA distribution.  As you walk through the steps there is a question that says was this withdrawal due to a 2021, 2022, or 2023 Qualified Disaster.  Answer, No, this was not a qualified Disaster Distribution.  

 

The other thing you can try is to uncheck the box next to QD 2023

So to clarify, yours is not being rejected by the IRS and you DID take a disaster distribution?

Correct.  I did take it, and I simply can't file from Turbotax.  See below:  

when i try to file I get this error message telling me I have to return later.  This has been happening since February.

Have you been able to successfully e-file? This problem should have been resolved last week.

Same issue with me....I am unable to file my return with the Form 8915-F, according to TurboTax.  The issue has NOT been resolved, although I received a text message saying it had.  

Is there a resolution on this?   If not, I am about to take my long-time business elsewhere and NEVER look back.

Try closing TurboTax, clear your Cache and Cookies if you are using TurboTax Online, and reopen TurboTax.  You can also try a different browser.

 

Also, make sure you have ran all updates.
