Is there any way for me to change to e-file after choosing the mailing option?

Yes, you can change your filing choice to e-file as long as you haven't already mailed your tax return.

If you use TurboTax Online and you selected that you wanted to print and mail your tax return, then TurboTax will treat your return as if you have filed.  If that is the case, you will no longer see, "Take me to my return/Continue my return" on your account.  To get around that issue, you will do the following:

  •  Log in to your TurboTax Online account
  • Click on Taxes, and then click on My Tax Timeline
  • Locate your 2016 tax return on that page
  • Find  "Some things you can do" under your 2016 tax return information
  • Choose Add a State (you don't actually add one; that's just to get the return to open up.)
  • Now you can follow the instructions listed in the TurboTax FAQ below to change to e-filing your return, rather than filing by mail.

Please see the following TurboTax FAQ for instructions on how to do so.

Yes.  If you haven't mailed it yet.  Click on Add a State to let you back into your return.

I printed the return, but again somehow managed to e-file my return. However, now the Turbotax online is showing me that I have filed my "2020 amended return". Is this an issue to worry about?

You must file your original return before your amended return can be processed.  So if you printed the original return, I suggest go ahead and mail it in to the IRS.  You must sign it and attach all W-2s and 1099s to the mail in form.

Thank you for the suggestion. I was wondering why would I even need to amend a tax return application which I never submitted. I just printed it but never sent it to IRS. Maybe Turbo software is treating my application as amended since I already printed it. I just printed it because I was not able to submit my application because of a bug in Turbo software initially.

Thanks,

Did you click on Amend to let you back into your return?  That was wrong.
